A Response To School Shootings

Enough is enough.

This is not an article about gun laws.

It seems that every time you turn on the news, a school shooting has happened. Santa Fe, Parkland, San Bernardino, Roseburg, Sandy Hook, Santa Monica, Chardon, and Marysville, just to name a few. School should be on the top ten list where people, especially kids, feel safe. I don’t have kids, but I can’t imagine sending my children to school and feeling scared that they won’t come home. That is unacceptable. No one should have to bury their child.

Unfortunately, school shootings are becoming more common, and the government doesn’t seem to be responding to any of them besides sending prayers to the victims’ families. Schools can’t be sitting ducks and wait for the next one to happen. We all want change, so we must change.

So here’s an idea

Schools should have security. Trained officers at the entrance of the school checking everyone who walks through the door. You’re probably saying, “That’s absurd!” Well, yes, it is, violating right of property, taking forever to get into the school, having to hire and train all these people, taxes probably increasing, it is a lot. But we’ve come to absurd circumstances.

To clarify, trained officers are not teachers. The job of a teacher is to teach. That’s what they should have to worry about and not having to check students or use any firearm if necessary.

Why are shootings at stadiums and arenas so low? Because when you go to a sporting event, concert, or show, security is there checking every single person who enters to make sure they do not have a weapon. So why can’t schools do the same?

When students go to school, they assume that none of their classmates have brought a weapon to class. But, this way makes sure of it never happening. At my former high school, the only thing preventing someone from bringing in a gun is a little sticker on the front door that said firearms are not permitted.

“Students shouldn’t have to wait in line and get their bags and persons checked just to go to school.”

You’re 100% correct, but people shouldn’t be killing people, people shouldn’t have bad mental health, schools shouldn’t be the one to act first. In a perfect world, children go to school, learn, and come home. But wouldn’t you want your child to have to do this little extra precaution before school and pay a little more for their safety? No amount of money or time is worth anyone’s life.

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.
