Responsibilities And Motivation In The Summer

Yeah, it can be hard to write that paper when the beach is on your mind...

Responsibilities And Motivation In The Summer
Brinkley Walser Stoner

It's summer, the weather is hot, the water is refreshing. There are beaches to visit, pools to swim in, ice creams to get, amusement parks to have fun at and usually all of that needs to get done on top of having a summer job. So where the hell should we find the motivation to keep up on any school work we're supposed to do, or work out, or walk the dog or do anything that requires any sort of motivation?

It's in the 90's and humid and all anyone wants to do is either be in water or laying in the air conditioning. The last thing I'm thinking of is getting in my half hour workout, or taking the dog out in the heat for a walk, or admittedly doing any sort of school work at all.

I'm someone who loves to procrastinate, not because I'm lazy, but because things can be daunting. Writing my entire senior project, a full-length play, over one summer is pretty terrifying. Especially since I can't always organize my ideas and the prospect of ultimately sharing something too personal and big with people is daunting as hell. It has to get done though, with or without motivation.

Summer is great for so many reasons but it can also be bad too just because it's so hard to take initiative to do the things that aren't exactly fun summer activities. I think a great way to tackle having no motivation is just to ignore that all together. If we consistently wait for motivation to come, it never will. We can't rely on that and that alone because it's always so fickle. Groan to yourself about what you have to do and then get up and do it because that's the only way its going to get done. Waiting for a strike of inspiration to hit won't help me finish the first draft of my play by the end of the summer. I have to rely on my passion and my goals, not how motivated or inspired I am. And yeah, it does suck, because I'll have extremely productive days and I'll have awfully lazy days. I'm not perfect, no one is and we all have our days...or weeks...where we put something off. Hell, it's summer, and there's a lot to do!

I think, between all the fun of summer, just telling yourself to do something and taking initiative and doing it will take you a long way. That's of course AFTER I've had all my fun for the day though, obviously.

So, yeah, I better go clean the apartment and walk the dog and then write more of my play even though the only motivation I have is definitely to just go swim.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
