The Best Response To Tragedy: Laughter

This week was depressing. Some people have taken to their social media accounts and some have written essays on Facebook. Others, like my fellow writers, have published articles and reflections. But I’ve noticed that these posts are not getting us anywhere. We need to move on from this tragedy. This is hard to do but it's necessary.

So what have I done to move on? I laughed. What? You laughed? You are a sadistic monster to laugh at the election of our first Oompa Loompa president! To clarify I wasn’t laughing at the election. I was laughing at the world.

There exists a world outside of CNN and Fox News Election Coverage that is pretty amazing. People seemed to have forgotten about it in the last year and a half. Everything that happened outside of the election was lost in flood of the latest tweet by Trump or the latest conspiracy theory about Clinton’s emails.

On Wednesday I spent half the day sulking. I was mad and didn’t want to calm down. But then I walked outside. The first thing I saw was someone playing Heathens by 21 Pilots on the piano near the library. I smiled a little, remembered the election results, and ran outside frowning. Within 10 steps of me being outside I saw a girl put her sweatshirt on backward and her boyfriend push the hood over her face. They both had big smiles on their faces.

As I was walking I saw skateboarding fails, a swarm of birds eating this girl’s sandwich, and so much more. I realized something as I got back to my dorm. The world will continue to exist even though it seems like it is all over. Happiness and Humor didn’t die on Tuesday night. The world kept spinning.

There is a wonderful line from Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse 5 that embodies how I feel: “So It goes.” While the line is used after someone dies, it is relevant to my situation. I kept thinking how my world was going to change but I refused to admit maybe I shouldn't worry so much and just let this run its course.

I think we all need to step back from this scary world that has arisen and just laugh. It is terrifying what could potentially happen but at the same time, the world will continue spinning. We will still exist. I am not advocating passivity. We should be aggressive if Tan Dump Lord’s government threatens our community. But we should also just realize there are other things happening in the world. Even some really funny things.

If you want to protest, protest. If you want to cry, cry. But if you want to feel better, laugh. Laugh at the world. Earth is a pretty absurd place.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
