This is our campus. This is not a place for anger and intolerance.
On Wednesday, May 10, a group from a Philadelphia church known as The Key of David Christian Center set up an angry protest on North Green at the University of Delaware. They began to start yelling angry remarks at students and criticizing their appearance. They attacked people of minority groups, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and students who they believed were not part of the Christian community. Here at the University of Delaware, we are accepting.
We work hard to make everyone feel special and feel that they belong on campus. We have minority groups on this campus. They belong here. To us, they're not any different than any other student on campus. You don't have a right to come onto our campus and harass our classmates and friends because they don't have the same skin color.
Our LGBTQ+ equality on the campus is astounding. We will be there to support our fellow students. Our Campus Climate score for students who consider themselves to be LGBTQ+ is a 4.5 out of 5. We strive to make a welcoming community for everyone. We believe in expression and showing who you truly feel you are. LGBTQ+ students are valued very much here.
As to the religion aspect, our campus is a non-religious affiliated university. Anyone who believes in any religion may come to our school, and we like it that way. Do not come preaching at us of your beliefs and discrediting ours.
If you think we aren't going to stand up for our floormates, classmates, best friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, professors, roommates, and visitors you'd be very wrong. This insane event happened on an event we here at Delaware like to call "I Heart UD Day" and we sure do love UD. We love our campus because we are so accepting. We love our campus because we can come together and fight hate, united. As much as we love UD, we definitely hate hate speech. This is our campus, these are our people, and this is most certainly not your place to preach hateful words. So next time you consider being hateful on our campus, how about you don't? Even better, how about you don't do it at all, ever.
