I saw this comparison on social media the other day comparing Lauryn Hill to Beyonce. While Lauryn’s music promotes self-worth, wisdom, and intelligence, Beyonce’s music promotes sexualization. This made me think if there is anything wrong with showing off what you have? Ladies, let me say this, if you do not respect yourselves, then no one will. Now I’m pretty sure both of these women respect themselves, but you must realize they are also two different people/artists. Listening to Lauryn’s music has helped me to respect myself even more.
I was at work one day and my boss showed me a dress that wasn’t in my taste. It was a bit revealing, cute, but not for me. People tell me I have a nice shape, curvaceous body type, and I see it as a compliment. But, I rather be classy and intelligent any day. Ladies, please don’t think that a big butt, big breast, and a revealing outfit will help you get respect. Beyonce does that for show when it’s time to go out on the red carpet, still showing her figure, but in good taste.
My upbringing was in a Christian household, and I still say it is because of what I was taught that I choose to dress modest. But when I got older, I found different reasons as to why I should hold myself to a certain standard. It’s not just about respecting oneself, but you show respect to loved ones by being a reflection of them. I’m a reflection of my mother by he way I walk and talk, the way I speak, and carry myself.
Whether you wear your hair straight, or curly, extensions, or not, it doesn’t promote respect. Whether you wear make- up, or not, it doesn’t promote respect. Whether you decide to wear a long skirt, or a short skirt, it doesn’t promote respect. Respect starts within. You must be smart, intelligent, and classy.
