This past week at the Nottingham date of the pop-punk band Neck Deep's UK tour, the band got involved in an altercation with security guards who were working the show. The thing is though, the band only got involved when security guards began putting fans in choke holds and body slamming them... because they were crowd surfing. The band had only gotten two songs into their setlist when everything began happening- and they didn't get to play any more than that.
The band has since apologized to their fans in Nottingham for having to cancel the show. It wasn't their choice- because the altercation involved security, the band wasn't allowed to continue with the show. Fans were disappointed, which is to be expected, but they understood why the show was cancelled.
Honestly, the whole situation got out of hand, which is exactly what Neck Deep posted in their statement on twitter. I can't say that I've lost respect for the band though. I've been to a lot of concerts over the last few years and in my experience nothing of that magnitude has happened, but I can say that in the pop-punk genre, artists really go to bat for their fans.
I don't know of many artists who would get involved in a fight to defend their fans. I mean, a member of Neck Deep was literally pulled off of the stage by security. Interestingly enough, the venue has commented in a private statement that it's security wasn't in the wrong, while they publicly just reposted Neck Deep's statement on their twitter.
I'm sorry, but if I was at a concert and all of a sudden security guards were putting fans who were just crowd surfing- which is a common occurrence at pop-punk concerts- I wouldn't be okay with it. Security is there to keep us safe, and especially in light of recent events, we need them more than ever... to PROTECT us, not slam us into the ground for trying to get closer to our favorite bands.
If I was a fan at that concert and the band DIDN'T get involved, I would lose all respect I had for that band. The fact that Neck Deep got involved says a lot about their relationship with their fans-which with every artist is a very important thing. In fact, I want to support Neck Deep even more than I did before because of this incident and my respect for them has grown immensely. Not many artists would take physical blows to defend their fans.
Whether you're a fan of Neck Deep or a fan of the pop-punk genre in general, I think we can agree that the way they defended their fans is admirable. I think it's safe to say that what happened in Nottingham was something that shouldn't have happened and should never happen again. Also, the world needs more bands like Neck Deep who are willing to go to bat for their fans.
