Resiliency... a buzz word that we mindlessly accept at first glance. But what does it mean to be a resilient person and how can you become one?
A quick Google search shows that resiliency is defined as "the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress." So... I'm writing about this why?
Without resiliency, a person is more likely to stop trying and accept defeat instead of trying once more. At the core of resiliency is an inextinguishable flame of desire that only burns stronger when adversity shows its nasty side.
The wise William Edward Hickson spoke, "If at first you don't succeed,: Try, try, try again," breathing essence into what it means to be resilient.
So, I'm sure you're thinking this is great and all, but HOW do I become resilient?
To start, you can close your eyes and think about all of the negative events that have played a role in your life today, the past week, or even the past year. Focus on these events and allow yourself to feel all of the emotions they created. For example, stress during finals, the loss of a close friend, not being selected for an internship, or anything that played a significant role in your outlook and mindset on life.
As you do this, breathe deeply in and out and allow your mind to rest on each moment for as long as you like. Once you feel you've allowed all events and related emotions to surface, begin thinking to yourself, "These events do limit me. I am strong, I am powerful, and I will have second chances."
Repeat this to yourself as many times as you'd like, and slowly you will begin to believe it. This is a basic meditation and can last as long as you prefer. The important point is to focus your mind on the meditation and clear it of the ceaseless list of to-do's.
This first step is the foundation to becoming more flexible. Once you are able to accept events, both good and bad, as a part of the human experience, you will enable yourself to find the silver-lining. Instead of falling down and staying down, you will remember that more opportunities lie over the horizon and you can only reach them if you're willing to accept failure and work towards success.
