Why Can't We Be Friends

Why can't the Republican and Democratic parties just get along?

Why can’t we be friends? And by we, I mean the Republican and Democrats.

Both of the national conventions for the two major political parties have come to an end. They both had one thing in common: Democrats bashed Republicans, and vice versa. Each party made the other look incompetent to their viewers, or at least tried to. The thing is, this is not just a presidential campaign thing; this is an every day, all year thing. Republicans and Democrats are constantly going head to head in the House and Senate. At both the state and national levels. Bills take forever to get passed, and most of the time there are huge arguments over them. So here’s my concern: is our country suffering because these two parties cannot get along? Say what you want, but our country is divided more than ever right now, mostly due to the presidential campaigns. People are seeing the candidates bash each other, so they do the same. Having your own opinion is great and being proud of your party is great. I’m a proud Republican without a doubt! However, you still have to have respect for your opponents. At the end of the day we are all Americans working to make America the best it can be. As for the political figures, they have first hand access to our nation's more important crises and pressing issues. However, those important tasks seem to come second to them; first is seeing how they can get in a new fight with their opposing party. For the Congress and the Senate, it comes at a cost of passing bills and helping to organize our country and make it more safe. For the presidential candidates, it comes at the cost of really trying to state how they want to change the country and start taking actions to do so. Even the President took time away from his speech to put Donald Trump on blast, when he could of been lifting his message and party higher. Of course all these people do a lot in their life and do make a difference. The Congress and the Senate do pass bills. But if the parties can find a way to work together instead of against each other, I can’t help but think even more would be done and America would excel at a higher rate. Instead unifying the parties, let's unify the country!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
