"They hate white people because white people are successful and they're not". Disrespectful words that came out of U.S. Representative Robert Pittenger of North Carolina last Thursday, regarding the protest that happened in downtown Charlotte for the police killing of Keith Lamont. Congressman Pittenger has since apologized for his comments, but the damaged has already been done.
I have learned that with anger, the words that have been sitting in the back of your mind usually come out with bouts of anger. This is what he did. He has always thought about it. In the comfort of his privacy. His apology was so...expected. “What is taking place in my hometown right now breaks my heart. My anguish led me to respond to a reporter’s question in a way that I regret. The answer doesn’t reflect who I am", but Rep. Robert Pittenger, it does. IT DID. It reflects that you don't anything about the very people who live in your state. You assumed that they are welfare ridden and never saw success before. Assuming makes you an "ass" if you didn't know.
Honestly, I think this statement kind of bothered me on a personal level. I am a product of a middle-class household, where both of my parents are collegiate graduates. I know others, who prevailed past the stereotypes to be a success in their own fields. It is so baffling how white people can turn a tragedy or protest, regarding African Americans, to make it about them. THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU! My brothers and sisters are not protesting about being jealous of your white privilege, we are protesting for us to keep our lives when we are dealing with those that are supposed to "protect and serve". Another thing, Rep. Pittenger? Those same "welfare-ridden" "jealous" types are the same ones that overcame those said obstacles to work with you in Congress. Assuming? *shaking my head*
I hope that the next election for North Carolina Representatives that you are not reelected as you clearly don't know about the people in your own state.
