Renowned Litigator & Attorney Darren Oved: One of the Most Influential Lawyers of the 21st Century

Lawyers can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who had their own legal code as well as people to defend those accused of violating the law.

Still, despite the tremendous history surrounding lawyers, the legal industry has been through significant changes in recent years. Of particular note is attorney Darren Oved, co-founder of the highly regarded and renowned law firm Oved & Oved LLP and Chairman of its highly acclaimed litigation department.

Mr. Oved has received recognition for having argued one of the “top 50 verdicts in New York” for his representation of trademark holder 4 Pillar Dynasty LLC against New York & Co. Inc. However, his career, his accomplishments, and his tremendous success have not only brought his clients success, but have also positively and drastically changed the legal industry as well.

Media Appearances

Oved has had an impact on several legal niches.

Oved defended Gerry Shalam is a well-known defamation and privacy case in which Shalam was videotaped without his consent, which garnered significant media attention. In this case, Oved argued on behalf of Shalam. The Daily Mail, Page Six, and the Asbury Park Press all cited Oved in their own articles regarding this matter. "This is a dishonorable exploitation of a young man who was clearly protecting himself and his friends from unwarranted intrusions into their private life at a vulnerable time," Oved said of the case to Daily Mail.

Oved was cited once again regarding defamation in an article that was written and published by Bloomberg Technology. This time, Oved was asked to explain the impact that Twitter has had on defamation and libel in the era of President Trump. Due to Oved’s expertise on the topic, Brightwork Research cited his expert opinion in their analysis of libel, defamation, and privacy law. Congressman Ted Lieu, of California’s 33rd district, even quoted Oved's expertise on the topic on his website, and in an interview cited Oved as the reason for not supporting Apple in their decision not to unlock the terrorists phone. Furthermore, Oved appeared as a guest speaker on Fox News on February 26, 2016, to discuss this issue.

In addition, Darren Oved has received significant attention for his representation of clients in privacy cases brought against major firms such as Apple and T-Mobile. In an article published by Tech News World, he was cited in relation to a legal dispute between Apple and the FBI regarding Apple's "opposition to unscramble data from one of the San Bernardino terrorists' iPhones." This dispute centers on Apple's refusal to decrypt the data on one of the iPhones used by one of the terrorists. On the same issue, Oved was quoted in CRM Buyer, Ecommerce Times, and Technology Times.

Oved received notable press coverage as well for his remarks regarding a defamation case involving Hulk Hogan, an American retired professional wrestler, and media star. These remarks were published in Forbes magazine, where Oved criticized the press, advising them to "consider carefully before publishing something like this" about wealthy businessman Peter Theil.

Sports Law

Darren Oved’s talents have also yielded him tremendous success and expertise in the sports sector.

Oved has proven to be crucial in a number of lawsuits filed against the Brooklyn Nets. His clients sought to sue the Nets for breaking the reselling rules, and he represented those clients in the lawsuit. In a statement to the New York Post, Oved stated this about the lawsuit: "The suit seeks to defend fans and free enterprise in the face of Nets practices that evidently do not appreciate either."

Oved has also been cited in relation to lawsuits filed against DraftKings by a football player from the University of Northern Illinois, Akeem Daniels. Daniels accused DraftKings of "exploiting the likenesses of college football and basketball players without compensation." Forbes cited Oved as saying, among other statements, that, "Having college athletes compensated by fantasy sports leagues is problematic." This sparked a great deal of controversy in the legal community and actually impacted case law all over the country.

Employment Law

In addition to privacy and sports law, Oved has tremendous experience and expertise in employment law, whether that may be in a company's mistreatment of employees or employees’ mistreatment of customers.

He was cited regarding Kesha's lawsuit against producer Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald for "infliction of emotional distress, gender-based hate crimes, and job discrimination." During the course of the conversation, Oved referred to the challenges that Kesha will face as "uphill," which created an uproar among media critics.

In addition to that, Oved has regularly been brought up in connection to the many employment discrimination cases that were brought against Uber. Oved was published in the Women's Health Magazine discussing the legal rights individuals have when faced with criminal activity in an Uber. Oved said, "Risk [in Ubers] has disturbingly become more and more apparent in light of the growing number of cases we’ve been seeing across the country involving gender-based crimes, including kidnapping, rape, and sexual assault committed by Uber drivers against their female passengers." Oved was quoted as saying, "Risk [in Ubers] has become frighteningly more evident in light of the growing number of incidents we've seen around the country involving gender-based crimes, such as kidnapping, rape, and sexual assault committed by Uber drivers against their female customers." In addition, Oved was a source for a Verge article that explored the question of whether or not Uber drivers should be considered full-time employees.

Oved was also interviewed about the legitimacy of the distribution of unemployment benefits during the coronavirus outbreak in which he was living. Oved made an accurate prediction in a piece for the New York Post when he stated that "unemployment insurance rates will almost likely climb."

Free Speech

Oved has also received recognition for his statements made on free speech.

He was cited as being a First Amendment lawyer by the Financial Post regarding a lawsuit involving celebrity singer Courtney Love. "Even in weak cases that get tossed by judges, attorney’s fees can range from $10,000 to $20,000. A case that does make it to a jury can go into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and so can a settlement, like those paid by Courtney Love," Oved told The Times. Insurance Journal and Claims Journal also quoted Oved in relation to First Amendment cases.

The historic Democratic Gazette also quoted Oved, citing him as an expert on First Amendment cases: "Even if [a First Amendment] case is dismissed or defeated, Oved said, it can still have its intended effect. It still managed to potentially chill your speech. Someone who has gone through that will think twice about posting."

Business Divorces

Oved also has significant expertise in business divorce matters. He was consulted in the case involving billionaire Sumner Redstone’s move to boot Philippe Dauman (chief executive officer and chairman of Viacom, the owner of MTV, Comedy Central, and Paramount Pictures) of the Viacom Inc. board. As Oved told numerous magazines, like Wealth Management and Deadline, “At this point, absent court intervention, it seems that Mr. Dauman’s removal as CEO is inevitable.”

Oved was also consulted about another high-profile business divorce case, involving wealthy investors Massey Knakal and Timothy King. Oved sided with the former in his defense after his company’s former COO, Timothy King, sued his firm, alleging among other things that the company was poorly run, was lending money to itself improperly, and made false statements on tax filings. When Knakal won this difficult case, Oved told The Real Deal: “Justice Demarest not only gave the defendants a victory by moving the litigation to a more private forum but also affirmatively stated that, ‘plaintiff had failed to demonstrate a sufficient likelihood of success on the merits,’ which is not a statement that arbitrators are likely to ignore.”

Real Estate Disputes

Oved also has displayed tremendous expertise in real estate disputes. He represented investor Abraham Leifer who was suing over a 220,000-square-foot Downtown Brooklyn assemblage. The head of Borough Park-based A view Equities, Leifer, claims that seller Henry Lieberman breached their contract by taking the property he had agreed to buy for $44 million, and marketing it to Leifer’s own potential investors for$3 a million less. The Real Deal credited Oved as being the winning attorney on this case.

Oved and his firm also successfully represented Jack Terzi’s JTRE Holdings after Michael Shah’s Delshah Capital sued him after Delshah acquired mortgage notes on two JTRE retail condos, at 31 East 28th Street and 27 West 72nd Street in Manhattan, at face value for a total of $9.8 million. Oved was quoted in the Real Deal as the attorney of the case, saying, “This case convincingly illustrates how imperative it is for a borrower’s counsel to carefully review the underlying loan documents to identify the basis of any alleged default.”

Oved also represented Florida-based startup firm AHBP LLC which accused a Texas real estate firm of fraud for supplying a useless disinfectant product intended for the Argentinian market during the pandemic, seeking over 90 million dollars in damages. Law.Com cited Oved and his brother Terrance as the star attorneys of this case.

Oved also represented J. Wasser & Company and Martin Templer in their multi-million-dollar lawsuit seeking to cancel its contract to buy 465 East 167th Street and 1178 Washington Avenue, which collectively have 38 rent-stabilized units. Oved’s success and expertise in the case were discussed by the Real Deal.

Oved was also asked to comment and provide his expert opinion about 881 Real Property Actions and Proceedings Law by the esteemed business magazine, Pincus. The cite states: “In 881 RPAPL actions, the court seeks to balance the competing interests of permitting the improvement of one party’s property that cannot otherwise be made without permitting that party to enter a neighboring property,” said Darren Oved, a partner with Oved & Oved, whose firm has represented several parties in 881 RPAPL matters.

“Most 881 matters are resolved amicably as license agreements are often agreed to by the parties. This calculus, however, changes dramatically when the scope, duration, and extent of the proposed work severely and adversely impact a neighboring property which usually results in disagreement on the terms of the license agreement and ultimately seeks, and finds, resolution in the courts,” Oved said.

Trademark Legislation

Oved received significant attention for his notable victory on behalf of client Four Pillar Dynasty in connection with its multimillion-dollar trademark dispute As Darren Oved was quoted as saying, “We are pleased that the Second Circuit has upheld the Jury’s and Judge Rakoff’s finding of willfulness and award of profits.” In 2017, Oved was recognized by multiple sources as receiving one of the top 50 verdicts in New York for that case, which Top Verdict Co., New York Magazine, and the Personal Injury Magazine all independently confirmed.

Art and Design

In addition to his role as an attorney, Oved is also a rumored art enthusiast and has represented numerous clients in design and art disputes.

Oved even represented Dr. Sandran Waran, a pediatric neurologist from Morristown, NJ, in his efforts to recoup what he paid in 2005 and 2007 for a 12th-century black stone stele of Vishnu and 11th-century sandstone figure of Uma. The New York Post wrote about Oved’s representation of Warren, in this case, even quoting Oved as saying: “I find it interesting that they had no compulsion in validating provenance when selling the pieces but when it’s time to [resell] . . . through them, they have some kind of trepidation in reaffirming the provenance.” Art Maker Monitor also quoted Oved about this case.

Oved also represented design company Fleet Street in a lawsuit against famed shoe designer Vince Camuto and behemoth retail company Aldo. The New York Post, in writing about this case, wrote: “ ‘They caused Fleet Street significant damage,’ the company’s lawyer, Darren Oved told The Post. His firm, Oved & Oved LLP, declined to provide details about the harm to Fleet Street, but he said layoffs could be a ‘logical’ outcome.”

Conclusion

The cases listed here are only the tip of the iceberg for Oved. He has litigated thousands of cases in each of the aforementioned sectors that have earned him the title of being an expert in each of those fields.

Still, most attorneys have only demonstrated success in one or two fields of law. Oved, on the other hand, has demonstrated his proficiency, expertise, and trailblazing nature through his massive successes and cumulative over a billion dollars in wins for his clients. He is a star in the legal world. It’s no wonder why he has received the awards that he has.

He has been cited by many ads “New York’s Best Litigator,” as well as a “Litigation Lion.”The Blot even cited Oved & Oved as a “litigation law house” and Darren Oved as a “legendary litigator who has a long track record of defending human rights and the American constitution.” His awards go on and on. Because Oved & Oved’s Darren Oved is a tremendous success. He is the attorney that every law firm dreads to face, because of his tendency to always win. After all, he is one of the most influential attorneys of the 21st century.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
