Social media makes us think that we are average or mediocre. We are bombarded with perfect Instagram pictures, Snapchats of people going to cool places, and inspirational tweets that we couldn't think up even if we tried.
But that isn't real. None of it is. I often follow YouTubers and watch more videos than I care to admit. When I go to my favorite channels, I have to remind myself that they are just like me. They have bad days, they look a mess in the morning, and they sometimes forget to do their laundry. They are human. They are just paid to look perfect and look like they have the perfect life.
What I often have to remember is to be my crazy, normal self. I have to remember all the things I have accomplished and though to some they might seem small, they are important to me. They are accomplishments to me. I don't need 1,000,000 followers or a deal with Cover Girl. I need to make dean's list, do well in my internship and find happiness within myself.
Sure, some days I want to think that I am in a YouTube video or in that perfect Instagram photo. I will go to a little cafe and do work and take photos or I will try to be artsy. To say I never try to seem "perfect" is a big lie, but I am still being myself. I am still liking what I like and not trying to follow what is "in."
This is your life and you only get one. Why try to be someone you aren't? Isn't this one life meant to have mistakes and mishaps? I think so. I was once told that being you will be the best thing you can be. That people will flock to that instead of being what you think people want. I really believe that.
So always remember to be you, a genuine original.
