A Reminder That We All Bloom In Time

I would like you to remember this on the hard days.

A Reminder That We All Bloom In Time
Jamie Groh

On the days you wake up and have no sense of direction, no sense of belonging, I would like for you to remember this important detail of life.

Growth is uneven. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly but nevertheless you are growing, and this is a reminder to breathe. Often we get caught up with our biological clocks that we forget to enjoy the slightest wins, and we forget to feel even the slightest losses. We are told from a young age to "plan for the future." We get lost in the pressure, the pressure, the pressure. The pressure of being the most social and going to elite schools and getting that thousand dollar degree. Pressured by getting that top job and car and house and family and p e r f e c t i o n, but forget about your sanity society will say. Forget about your happiness, there is no time for that.

Stop.

Just for a moment.

Stop comparing and overanalyzing your life based on what other people around you have or do not have. How do you feel? Are you drowning in your goals or are you rising to them? There is a difference in how we approach what we truly want out of our life and sometimes that will mean blocking out the greater opinions of what other people have told us our whole lives.

Sometimes it's the most strength that we find in our solitude. When we give ourself the time to listen.

Our lifetime is made up of more than educational debt and bank accounts. Remember this when you are balancing a hundred things at once. Do not fear failing and do not fear the unknown because there is no rush, we all come into bloom at our own time. All of the stumbling and searching will eventually lead you down the path that you were always meant to be walking, maybe not as soon as you think though. Ask yourself what is it that you love? We are not all meant to walk the same path and meet the same standards, and definitely do not grow in the same wavelengths. If it is not the right time, then it's just not the right time. You cannot push what is not ready. You cannot grow when it is not your season.

It is not going to be an easy journey, and some days you will trek through mud so deep you'll think you may never find your way out again. It is not always an easy task to continue moving forward and on the days that you can't find your breath and you might be shaking, remember that you are making the long journey back to yourself.

We sometimes grow uneven, mature in one area and immature in another. We are made of different cells, seasons, motives and dreams and we are asked to honor these spaces we fall into over and over until someday you realize that you are home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
