In our day and age, there is this romanticized view that at a certain age you’re supposed to have everything figured out. To be quite honest here, most of us don’t…and if you’re like me, you probably don’t really like the people around you who act like they do.
At this point of my life, I’m unsure about everything, what to wear, what to eat, when to speak, what to do, once again, let me reiterate I don’t have anything figured out; and if you’re reading this, you probably don’t either. (If you’re reading this and you do have everything in your life figured out, let it be said that I’m extremely happy for you, but exit this post now and live your happily ever after).
I think the worst part of not knowing what I’m doing is it seems like everyone, yes everyone, around me has found that deeper meaning of what life is. But in all actuality, no one our age has it figured out. The person who began reading this article in disbelief that anyone could not have it figured out doesn’t even have it figured out. Let’s get real here, a great portion of our lives including our “adult” ones have been spent behind some sort of desk watching PowerPoint presentations, listening to lectures and surfing the web on the laptop you brought to class to “take notes.”
With that being said, it’s OK to be just as confused behind your college desk as you were behind your high school one. I’m not sure who thought that between walking across a stage at graduation and moving into a dorm with someone you don’t even know would completely prepare you for the “real” world, but it doesn’t.
I’m here to tell you, just as I tell myself, that it’s OK to switch majors, to change your career goal, to take a nap, and to not have an internship or job offer lined up for summer. It’s OK to be human, to make mistakes, to not turn in a homework assignment and forgetting to submit an excuse for a sorority event (a big hello to the sister who keeps fining me for forgetting to come to events…I have a valid excuse, I was writing this article).
So remember, it’s OK to not know your final destination. It's OK to not have it all figured out. Embrace where you are now and the rest will come later. Enjoy the moments you have and realize that you’re still learning and definitely still growing. This is not the end this is the beginning of a beautiful life.
I may not know where I’m headed but I know that I’m on the right path to becoming everything I want to be, realizing that I don’t have everything figured out and that it’s OK, is a push in the right direction. I’m not perfect, I’m human. You’re not perfect, you’re human.
