The whole world is a little darker this week as the death of Kate Spade tugs at the heart strings of many.
Though I did not personally know her, through the colorful spirit that was emulated through her purses, clothes, and accessories, I know I am not alone in feeling that we were all lucky enough to experience a sliver of Kate Spade's sophistication and beautiful soul.
While I was first drawn to her store because of the unique shapes, patterns, and concepts incorporated within her merchandise, as I became more acquired to her products, I found I most enjoyed the little quotes she included with her products. Not only were her quotes a cute accessory to her products, they were always inspiring and positive, pointing out the beauty in the flaws women often find within themselves, empowering women of all ages to strive for self-acceptance.
Some of her quotes depicted women living their best lives through the pleasures of fast food.
"She found a way to have her cake and eat it too."
"She eats takeout in china and serves pizza with champagne."
Others illustrated the dramatic entrances and vibrancy of a woman adored and admired by all.
"She has a way with words, lipstick, and making an entrance."
"She is the first to give a toast and the last to say goodnight."
"She danced all night and all the way home."
"She had a cocktail in her hand and confetti in her hair."
"She's the exclamation point to every lively sentence."
Some simply made us laugh.
"She sings off-key but with great spirit."
"I've never been a millionaire but I just know I would be darling at it."
And of course, some reminded of us the thrill of wearing cute clothes.
"Playing dress up begins at age five and never truly ends."
"She believes good shoes take her good places."
All, however, where characterized by the confidence of a woman who was unapologetically herself.
"She says when in doubt, take it up a notch."
"She writes her own rules and inspired others to follow."
"She believed she could so she did."
In Kate Spade's words, we each saw a little bit of ourselves, making mistakes, living unapologetically as ourselves, and loving every minute of it. I can't thank her enough for her selfless act of allowing us to find enjoyment in the little things, the motivation to work towards our goals, and the encouragement to seize the undeniable desire to be nothing but ourselves -- even though she herself may have been struggling with these aspects of life.
And though she is no longer with us, her words will live on, inspiring current and future women to live their best lives, no matter what that way may be – fulfilling possibly her most iconic quote,
"She leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes."
