Memorial Day is a day when we remember those who died in active military service. Since it's observed on the last Monday in May, it affords many of us a three-day weekend. As nice as a three-day weekend is, I feel many of us have lost the true meaning of Memorial Day. I saw very few Facebook posts acknowledging what Memorial Day is really about.
We need to take time to remember all of our service members, not just those who have passed on. I do not know what it is like to serve my country. These men and women risk everything for our country and our freedom. I wish I could thank each of these men and women personally. They did something that I am frankly too scared to do. They gave up the comforts of home. They gave up being able to eat the foods they enjoy. Above all, they gave up precious time with their friends and family.
As we enjoy our barbecues, beach days and freedom, we need to take time to think about what Memorial Day is really about. I challenge you to think about your friends and family that cannot celebrate with you because they are serving our country.
To all who served, thank you. Thank you for sacrificing so much to help our country. I hope you receive the recognition you deserve, not only on Memorial Day, but everyday.
