To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice,
Your sacrifice is not lost. Because of your service and sacrifice to the United States of America, I do not know firsthand the perils of war. You have given me the opportunity to express my political views and practice my faith. Because of your service I am guaranteed an education. I owe you a debt that can never be repaid. You left behind mothers, fathers, spouses, children, brothers, sisters, and grandparents on account of your fellow countrymen. You have my utmost respect, and I pray for your loved ones that had to learn to live life without you.
On the back of my car I have a sticker that reads, “Home of the Free Because of the Brave.” I know in the grand scheme of things this is insignificant, but it reminds me that freedom comes at a price. This nation came through those who prized freedom of thought over their lives. Our nation was founded by those who prized equal rights and the ability —to pursue Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness— would be to a free people. Without your sacrifice the world would be a much different and darker place. Your lives are not forgotten nor are they taken for granted. You have given life to the Stars and Stripes. This Memorial day Americans nationwide will pay tribute and honor the sacrifice you made acknowledging the freedom we have was not free. You gave your life for people you would never know because you, like many who came before you, realized and believed the principles the United States upholds and promotes are worth preserving. John 15:13 says it beautifully, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Thank you for your service and sacrifice!
"The United States and the freedom for which it stands, the freedom for which they died, must endure and prosper. Their lives remind us that freedom is not bought cheaply. It has a cost; it imposes a burden. And just as they whom we commemorate were willing to sacrifice, so too must we -- in a less final, less heroic way -- be willing to give of ourselves.” -Ronald Reagan, May 31, 1982
