Why I Can't Leave High School Behind

11
Remembering My Roots

Don’t get me wrong, I am delighted to be college now, especially a public one. I grew up in the private school system being nurtured, protected. It is nice to have been eased into the real world! I have made amazing friends at UNT from all over Texas and while I strive to create deep, lasting friendships with my new family I am often reminded of my lifelong friends I can’t leave behind.

My biggest fear upon graduating high school would be that I would never see my best friends again. I spent three wonderful years getting to know my small cozy band like family and a whopping SEVEN years with two women I know will be my future bridesmaids (spoiler!) Not to mention my sweet next door neighbor I grew up with! I was overcome with fear and doubt senior year after accepting the offer to come to UNT, but I am happy to report that with effort, I was able to keep my friendships and continue to build stronger ones! So here's to my roots: thank you for putting up with me and helping me grow stronger as an individual and a woman of God! You all hold me accountable for my actions and offer mercy when I fall. I hope I keep you going in the way you keep me going strong through rough semesters, clubs, change, etc.

These are some of my best friends. We have kept up through a group text for almost two years. It was hard at first but now telling each other everything is second nature again as if we were still in high school. I am so thankful for friends who have my back all over the country and I hope they know I've got their backs here at home too. We plan weekly Google video chats so we can all come together and discuss anything we want. When someone flies back into town we always have a hangout planned!

I spent my spring break in Mexico with none other than my high school band! It was incredible to be able to hang out with the seniors and offer stories and advice when it came to preparing for college, encourage my juniors to power through the year, tell my sophomore babies that high school will fly by, and get to meet the upcoming freshmen! Was it a familiar setting, yes, but I wouldn't trade that spring break for anything!

Now these lovely ladies are my best friends and sisters for life! They'll no doubt be my future bridesmaids when the time comes. We are proof that you can keep a strong friendship even if it seemed destined to fade into the background with high school. Even in college, we have been there to support one another through texts, phone calls, Skype calls, and FaceTime. It's not easy with busy schedules and daunting futures that lie ahead, but once sisters always sisters! As much as social media wants to tell me to leave high school behind I just can't help but find myself drawn back to my roots.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
