Have you ever suddenly craved ice cream?
How about a margarita?
How about a nap.
These things, though little, can nag at the back of our minds and place a mantle of craving over us. The tangible feeling of coolness on our tongue is all we desire at a moment we can't have it! These desires can be SO fulfilling when carried out and SO annoying when left unanswered.
It's something we know we should not do or know we should not have. Our conscious, or the Holy Spirit, will be like BRO! You can't do that! But our desires feel like they're overwhelming us. They won't go away.
What if God was all we desired?
What would happen?
I do not want to be left empty. I want my Cup to Runneth over. Psalm 23:5.
What if just the presence of the Creator is enough?
If He is good, which is the absence of bad, and perfect, which is the absence of imperfections, and love, which is the absence of hate, don't you think this is all we need?
I argue it does.
However, in that moment we desire something so ardently we feel like we may die if we don't get it, we are NOT stuck. We have just forgotten to look to the creator of the thing we desire, not the thing itself.
Lusting after someone? Sex is a GOOD thing. But it's a Created thing. So if you know it is not your season for that, just look at the Creator. Want someone else's car? Thank God you have two feet that can walk.
It is HARD to live eternally in a finite world of things we want.
But every sacrifice we make to seek fulfillment in the Creator alone is a sacrifice that points us back to the ultimate one. It says in Isaiah 55:1 to come to the water and buy wine and milk without money or cost. Jesus is compared to being better than free food and drink. He is everlasting.
Every time we die a little ourselves, Christ's death is glorified.Peace automatically comes with that.
1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.
He is a good Dad who does not want us to be needing of anything or lacking anything. He will meet your desires so perfectly that you are in awe every single time. Or, He will ask you to give them up, only to surprise you with bigger and better blessings. It may take years, but more often than not, His love takes but a millisecond to penetrate your heart.
Then we can "know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, and be filled up to all the fullness of God." Ephesians 3:19.
Our neediness. Our wants. He loves everything about us, so maybe we should try to love everything about Him and less of the things of the world.
Maybe it's time to just seek Him?
"I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. but take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33.
