Remember The True Meaning Of Memorial Day

For most of us, it is simple to overlook the true meaning of holidays. The way that holidays are celebrated are incredible and not to be disrespected in any way whatsoever, but it is extremely important to remember the true reasoning behind each one. It is natural to celebrate with pure enjoyment and the comforting presence of others. For example, Christmas revolves around gifts and Santa to bring about happiness, but families also make a great effort to recognize what is believed to have truly happened on this day; prayers are said, thanks are given and gratefulness is shown. This is what matters.

Memorial Day, held on the last Monday in May, is special; it is unique in an abundant amount of ways and sometimes we overlook the importance of it. It is common to spend this long weekend with family and friends, relaxing by a lake, grilling burgers and hot dogs, soaking up the sun, but while doing this, we are simultaneously forgetting what is rightly meant to be remembered. So, let's make a change.

Memorial Day is a day fully dedicated to the fallen soldiers who risked their lives in the United States Armed Forces for us, for all of us. It was created to be filled with remembrance for those who had lost their lives; we can’t forget this. It’s okay to spend this time surrounded by tents, boats and barbecues, but let’s not forget to have in our minds a prayer, a thought, or simply the idea of these brave men and women. Some families may even dedicate hours of the day to talking about and reminiscing on soldiers they have loved and lost. Although this day can be jam-packed with sorrow, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. There can be conversations about unforgettable memories, such as the joyful times experienced with these men and women and how their bravery was the reason we are able do many of the things we can do today.

While showing gratitude on this holiday, it is important to take into account the perspective of others. To young students, it is a day off from school when the fallen soldiers are remembered. But to Veterans, it is a day to remember friends and to remember the men and women who were on the same field or the same ship as them. Veterans witnessed the reasoning behind Memorial Day. They witnessed the true risks that we're taken for the sake of protecting our beautiful country.

The courage withheld in those who risked their lives to protect us is completely indescribable. I’m constantly inspired; my mind, soul and body overflow with amazement when thinking of their bravery. The importance of Memorial Day holds extreme significance in all of our lives. The lives that have been lost in war were lost for us. They have given us the protection that many people thought was only possible in dreams. We are able to proudly sing our National Anthem and leave our beloved homes without worrying about our families’ safety. The idea of a tragedy occurring isn’t on our minds because our country is protected; it is protected because of these men and women.

This week of Memorial Day, let’s take action. Thank a Veteran, place an American flag at the grave of a fallen soldier, attend a ceremony, thank families’ for the bravery of their loved ones, be there to wipe others’ tears, or simply say a prayer. It’s okay to celebrate this holiday with pleasure and laughter by a lake with a grill, but let’s all remember the true meaning behind this day while enjoying it. If everyone commits a small act or shares a simple thought of remembrance, the importance of Memorial Day will never be forgotten.

Thank you to all those who served in the United States Armed Forces to protect our country. You are all appreciated every single day and the gratefulness we hold for you will never fade.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
