Throughout this election, I have chosen to remain out of most political conversations online. I never wanted to write about it for the sole purpose of avoiding hatred directed at me. I've never been one to engage in heated political debates on social media, especially when most of them end in name-calling. I've always thought it best to keep my name and opinion out of conversations online that revolve around politics. Even now, that is not what I am here to do. I'm not here to write about the election or tell you my stance. I'm not writing this to stir up drama or start a political debate. I'm writing on behalf of all the fighting, disrespect, and anger that I've seen on social media following the results of the election.
Donald Trump has won the presidency; this is a fact. Whether you agree with it or not, no matter who you voted for, no matter which side you were on, he will be our next president. A lot of people are thrilled with his victory, and a lot of people are upset. It's okay to be angry. It's okay to disagree with the results and to be disappointed, and it's certainly okay to voice your opinion. Unfortunately, I've seen conversations take an uglier turn on social media the past couple of days.
I've seen "friends" completely disrespecting and lashing out at one another because of opposing political views. I've seen verbal attacks directed at people because of who they did or didn't vote for. I've even seen it taken as far as to wish physical harm on another person because someone else's views didn't align with their own.
Regardless of the election results, the amount of hatred that is being spewed across all social media platforms is disgusting. There is absolutely no need for any disrespect from either side. Instead of lashing out at someone's ideas that you don't agree with, either keep your opinions to yourself or talk to them about it in a respectful manner. Listen to what they have to say, take it into consideration, offer your input, and move on. No matter which candidate you voted for, there is absolutely no need to be outright disrespectful to others who may not agree with you.
I have plenty of friends who have views that differ from mine. Instead of blocking each other on Facebook, we respect each other's differences and continue living our lives. This election shouldn't be an excuse to treat your friends and family poorly, and it certainly doesn't call for pure hatred towards anybody.
You can be discouraged, disappointed, relieved, or excited--but it is never okay to treat someone poorly because of who they voted for.
