Remaining Positive In A Negative World

Don't stress, do your best, forget the rest.

Unfortunately, life is negative. End of story. Period. Every time you turn on the television, something horrific has happened. Innocent lives taken, hatred being spewed across city streets, and the love has been lost. It can be extremely hard, sometimes almost impossible, to stay positive. I have learned recently that a more positive outlook on life, can drastically change the way you live your life. Here are five ways to stay positive in a negative world...

1. A bad 45 minutes does not equal a bad day.

If you exaggerate a negative thought or feeling, it not only makes that moment worse, but it can turn your bad moment into a bad day. Instead, be REAL. If you have a sad moment or a negative thought, don't let that one, small amount of time, ruin the rest of your day.

2. Encourage others.

One of the biggest things that helped me have a more positive outlook was giving encouragement to other people. So much joy can be found in giving others compliments or doing kind things for another person. Instead of dwelling on the negative parts of your life, focusing your attention on others can help you conquer whatever battle you are facing. You never know what someone is going through, so your kindness can uplift them, and that in turn can uplift you.

3. Give yourself small pep-talks.

"You've got this." "You are beautiful and strong." It may seem crazy or dumb, but it really helps. Be there for yourself, because at the end of the day, you are all you've got.

4. Get rid of the negativity.

Don't let it in! It will spoil any happiness and it isn't worth your time. Focus on the things that make you happy, and bring joy into your life. If a negative thought passes through your mind, give it one minute. And when that one minute is up, let it go. Don't let one thought ruin your positivity.

5. Consider yourself blessed and be thankful for those blessings.

I mean, after all, you are alive and are breathing, so you have a lot to be thankful for. Those little things that you don't think matter, really matter to someone else, like food, clothing, shelter... There are a billion things I can be thankful for and I remind myself that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Everything happens for a reason and I am going places. God has blessed me with so many things that bring joy into my life and there is no room for negative things.

This world can drag you down and try to break you, but you can rise up and show the world your positivity. Trust me, this world could use some more peace and love. Radiate it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
