Remaining Positive: How to Maintain Your Happiness
Hope & Optimism

The world seems, especially within the past year, as if it is a black hole that everyone is slowly being sucked into. Many people have grown cold and indifferent because of the slew of misfortunes that 2016 seemed to keep on pitching. When things go wrong, it's hard to maintain a positive outlook; especially when it seems as if shootings, racism and general indecency plague our society.

Fortunately enough, good still exists in a lot of things, people and places. While horrible things seem more memorable, we must stop forgetting how kindness feels. How many times has someone gone out of their way to make you smile, or feel better? How many times have you done something to make someone's day better? It's questions like these that we must ask ourselves to stay grounded.

Pain is numbing, devouring and often times disheartening to those who feel as if their world is falling to pieces in front of them. With an emotion so powerful, we give it the right of way to embalm us in its flames. Maintaining positive takes more than a smile: it is self-discipline, self-love and a whole lot of practice. Being happy isn't always the easiest option, but it's always the most worth it.

Always be kind to someone, including yourself. You make a difference in this world; happiness is a domino effect, and the most infectious feeling on earth. Be the person that you can't find in the world.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
