With the news that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris have officially broken up, the internet has suddenly lost all hope. If these two high powered celebs couldn't stay together, how could any of us normal people even try?
Fear not, my fellow readers! I went digging to find some of the longest lasting relationships in the Hollywood sphere. I was super impressed to see how long some of these couples have been together. I wanted to share some of the popular power couples out there that you might not have thought about.
1. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
Married since 1997, the couple first met when Jada auditioned to be Smith's girlfriend on "Fresh Prince of Bel Air." While she didn't get the part, she had effectively caught Will's eye and the two started dating shortly after. They now have two kids from the marriage, Jaden and Willow. Jada Smith has some wise words for those thinking about getting married young though: "[Jada Smith] confessed that she got married "too young" at the age of 25 in 1997." Heck yeah! No, don't do it," she said of what she tells her kids of marrying at a certain age. "It did work out, but let me tell you: It worked out in a way that thank God I had a husband who's a gangster partner. Taking that road from 25 to 44."
2. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
An interesting case of love at first sight, Tom Hanks has admitted that he first fell in love with Rita when she guest starred on "The Brady Bunch." They met years later, and became romantically involved and officially got married in 1988. They say that, even though they typically don't fight, most of their arguments happen in the car! Now that's something I can relate to.
3. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
They met in 1991 and waited six years to get married, finally tying the knot in 1997. After being married for 19 years, their secret to being married in Hollywood? Not talking about it to anyone! They strive to keep their privacy, staying out of the eye of the public and away from the press. The couple has three kids together, James, Marion Loretta, and Tabitha.
4. Denzel and Pauletta Washington
They've been together since 1977, but they didn't get married until 1983. Why? Because Denzel had to propose three different times before she would actually accept! They have four children together, son John David, daughter Katia, and twins Olivia and Malcolm. They feel like one of their reasons for success is that they've been together for the ups and downs, and they can rely on each other no matter what.
5. Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness
The couple was married in 1996 and started as a crush by Jackman on his first job. He was working on an Australian drama called "Corelli" and everyone in the cast had a crush on the main star: Deborra-Lee. Since they became an item, they've had two kids, Oscar and Ava, together. Jackman says that part of the reason their marriage has been so successful is because it began before he became Wolverine.
6. David Bowie and Iman
Even though David Bowie passed away in January, his love story with Iman has been one for the ages. They fell in love at first sight, after meeting at a dinner party in 1990. The two got married two years later, in 1992, and stayed together until his death in 2016. They, also, chose to keep their marriage private from most of the paparazzi and press. The only time they ever did a photo shoot together was for Vogue in 1995.
7. Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan
Fox and Pollan first met in 1985, interestingly enough, when Pollan played Fox's love interest on "Family Ties." They didn't date until 2 years later after they finished shooting another movie together. They married in 1988. Impressively, they've worked through Michael J. Fox's Parkinsons disease and they have three children, son Sam and twins Aquinnah and Schuyler.
8. Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman
Dating since college, Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman are the epitome of college sweethearts. They met the first day of college at the University of Pennsylvania. Ten years later, Handelman proposed unexpectedly and the couple was married in 2003. The pair now own Brownstone Productions, the company in charge of "Pitch Perfect."
9. Viola Davis and Julius Tennon
Viola Davis asked God for a husband, and not long after, Julius Tennon came into the picture. According to Viola, she "prayed for a certain kind of man to come into her life" who was emotionally available, from the South, and loved God among other things. Julius in an ex-football player from Austin, Texas. The couple's first date was even to a church. They tied the knot in 2003, and adopted their daughter Genesis in 2011.
10. Matt and Luciana Damon
Originally meeting in South Florida, where Matt was shooting a movie, and Luciana was a bartender. They started dating quietly and two years later were married in a private civil service. Matt credits some of the success of their marriage to the fact that they don't stay apart for over two weeks at a time. Matt says, "I think you need to be with the person you love as much as possible. My wife is my soul mate. I don't like being apart from her." Additionally, the couple raises Isabelle and Gia, daughters from their marriage, and Stella and Alexia, daughters from Luciana's first marriage.
11. David and Victoria Beckham
This power couple has been on the scene since the mid-90s. Victoria met David Beckham at a Manchester United charity match and started dating shortly after. Turns out they had scoped eachother out before meeting the first time, as David had seen her in a music video and declared that "that's the girl for me!" The couple was married in 1999 and moved to LA in 2007. Now living in LA, the couple still has regular date nights -- even if it's just sitting and watching TV together.
12. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick
Kevin and Kyra met on the set of "Lemon Sky" and were married shortly after, in 1988. They've been one of Hollywood's longest running couples since. We saw some of the romance online, via his Instagram account, as he shared beautiful throwback pictures in honor of their 27th wedding anniversary. Aww!
13. Steve and Nancy Carell
This hilarious couple met when Nancy attended an improv class offered by Steve! This teacher-student relationship developed outside of the classroom and the couple was soon married in 1995. They were both very bashful and shy about wanting to date, but Steve has said one of the reasons they get along so well is because they have a similar sense of humor! Imagine that?
14. Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham
The media mogul that is Oprah Winfrey has been engaged to her fiance Stedman since 1992! They started dating in 1986 and haven't felt the need to get married since. Oprah explained that she doesn't want to get married because she doesn't feel like the relationship would change if they were married. Both Oprah and Stedman believe that the relationship wouldn't have lasted had they been married.
15. Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi
The couple has been together since 2004, after meeting backstage at an awards show. They got married at their Hollywood home in 2008, surrounded by their mom's and a few close friends. E! Online typically calls them one of the happiest couples ever, and in an interview with E!, we can see that too!
16. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
The couple started dating reportedly in 2004, but didn't get married until 2014. Interestingly enough, both of them proposed, just a year apart! David proposed first and then the following Valentines Day, Neil proposed. They now are raising a set of twins together, Gideon and Harper, who call them Daddy and Papa.
17. Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas
My personal relationship goals, Goodwin and Dallas play Snow White and Prince Charming on ABC's "Once Upon a Time." The now real-life couple started dating in 2011, marrying in 2014. They have a beautiful baby boy and are still working together in their careers. They say that they attempt to keep work and home separate, which helps them a lot.
18. Snoop Lion and Shante Broadus
Little did I know, but these two lovebirds are actually high school sweethearts! They were married in 1997 and, though almost getting divorced one time, they remain married. Snoop has released that, because the subject of most rap songs are women and sex, "boo" is a reference to his wife so she doesn't feel so insecure about his music. He's really looking out for her.
19. Beyonce and Jay Z
This power couple has been around since 1999-2000. Beyonce has said she started dating Jay Z when she was 19 years old! They took time to develop their relationship though and didn't get married until 2008. Though they've admitted they've each had rough spots, they both appear to be as much in love as they were at the beginning.
20. Kirk Douglas and Anne Buydens
Finally, this golden couple had to be mentioned. They've been together since 1954! They met overseas, when Kirk was in France and Anne was initially unimpressed by the Hollywood hotshot. Her unimpressed attitude caught Kirk's eye and when Kirk went back to New York and Anne came to visit, he realized he didn't want to lose her. Though their initial wedding was hasty, performed in Vegas in front of a Justice of the Peace, he treated her to a full wedding in 2004 for their 50th wedding anniversary.
So hopefully, some of these couples can show you that there are in fact relationship goals still hiding in Hollywood. It's not all about Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, I promise. Us "plebians" can still find true love.
