Division and Polarization

Relations and Politics

As a result of the recent elections I have found my relationships have encountered great tensions based on political and social beliefs. For example, the night before the elections went through, a friend contacted me to share a very angry message with me regarding my voting preferences. This shocked me as she had never addressed me in this fashion before. I began to think about my friendships and my family relations that have been strained as a result of political beliefs and this saddened me. It is important for individuals to recognize that politics in the last ten years have polarized our nation like never before. This is a phenomena I have never experienced so intensely as I am now. I do have faith that relationships will prevail over politics though.

As I approach conversations with friends and family I ask questions and do my best not to make statements that eliminate someone else's opinions, or discredit them. I do my very best to keep a calm tone and maintain a level of respect and open inquisition as to what their feelings are and why they may believe what they do in that moment. One reason why this election did have the outcome that it did, was actually because polling was inaccurate and more people voted red then many expected. This occurred because many people felt they would be accosted or disrespected or chastised for their voting preferences. Let us not allow our relationships to become divided and to disintegrate as a result of our polarization in this nation.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
