As anyone remotely close with me knows to be true, I adore Star Wars. If you read one of my previous posts you might know that too and you might not even know me as well. Anyway, this week I decided to drop another article relating to that galaxy far, far away so brace yourselves.
So, if you're not as familiar with the movies here's what you need to know for this article: in the galaxy there are Jedi who keep peace and use the light side of the Force (a mystical energy basically) and then there are the Sith: sworn enemies of the Jedi who use the Force's dark side and create all kinds of chaos in the process.
Ultimately the Jedi win out (Spoiler alert) but to me, the Sith are the more interesting characters and here's why I get them:
They're Passionate
The Sith are fueled by passions. Part of the Sith's code says "Through passion, I gain strength" which is actually kinda true for real life. If you do something you're passionate about, chances are you'll do it well and there's certainly strength in doing both something you love doing and doing it well. For me, I'm a passionate historian so I tend to do well when presented with historical facts in class or if it's on a Jeopardy clue.
They Aren't Afraid of Emotions
I think in this day and age emotions are being discouraged more than they have been in the past. Some people are just more emotional than others and that shouldn't be seen as a flaw at all, rather a good thing because those more in tune with their emotions will be able to form deep connections with others better than those who shove emotions in a corner. I'm of the latter group myself but it is something I have been working on recently to open myself more to communicating my emotions to others.
They've Got Darth Vader
And he's obviously the coolest villain in the galaxy am I right? I mean, who didn't secretly want to be him as a kid? (I was once for Halloween) My personal love of Anakin/Vader could seriously rival Kylo Ren's. And also he was pretty cool before his iconic life-support suit came into play. I won't lie and say I have a thing for pre-suit Vader and have since I was 10.
Some Sith Are Capable of Redemption
The whole series is basically the story of a guy who grows up with nothing, follows his life dream, fears losing his loved ones and then becomes evil to try and prevent it, and in the end it's the love he is shown indirectly by his son that saves him from the darkness. Say what you will, but in my opinion, Anakin Skywalker has one of the most in-depth character arcs in pop culture regardless of your feelings on the prequel films or his character portrayal in them. Star Wars is really an epic fable about how love can literally save lives and that's pretty cool.
