I have been obsessed with The 1975 since I saw them in concert last April. Now, obviously I, as well as many other fans, have an overbearing affection towards the band's frontman Matty Healy, but the true factor in my infatuation comes from the 1975's relatable lyrics. Here, I present you with the top songs by The 1975 that make us all say "same."
1. "Loving Someone"
This song represents the societal conformation we all go through when looking for relationships. The media hardcore puts sex above love and the band is calling out society for brainwashing kids into thinking love is nothing. Also, they are stating that people are being pressured into having sex and not understanding the true meaning of love.
"Holding up the status quo instead of showing your kids that they matter, who're you gonna batter next?"
2. "You"
This song is the crappy ex song we've all wanted. It's very upbeat, but also deep af. The real truth behind the song is that love is more than physical and when people emotionally beat you up it weighs heavy on the soul. It takes more than a person who treats you awfully to be happy and physicality only takes you so far.
"It takes a bit more, yeah it takes a bit more than you."
3. "Robbers"
Get ready to have your heartstrings pulled. The metaphor of a robber represents the way people steal our hearts and can easily kill them. This song shows one of the hardest back-and-forths we all face: loving someone who hurts you knowing you should leave them but you can't because they mean everything to you. Get the tissues.
"I'll give you one more time. We'll give you one more fight, said one more lie. Will I know you?"
4. "Sex"
Here comes another song by The 1975 that's going to rip your heart out. While the name implies the premise of the song the real story contains the heartbreak of loving someone you can't have. This friends with benefits relationship never ends well. Someone always catches feelings and ends up hurt.
"It's only minutes before I drop you off. All we seem to do is talk about sex. She's got a boyfriend anyway."
5. "Change of Heart"
People always talk about falling in love with someone but what about the nitty gritty of falling out of love with someone. The song accounts the hard parts of leaving someone you once cared for and realizing they weren't the person you thought they were.
"You used to have a face straight out of a magazine. Now you just look like anyone."
6. "Girls"
This song entails the difficulties of dating a younger counterpart. Even as far apart as a year can make a difference. There's such a maturity difference between a 17 year old and an 18 year old and the naivety of such a person can come back to stab you in the back. Also when you date someone who has a different maturity level you tend to change yourself for them and that's never a good thing.
"She can't be what you need if she's 17."
7. "Somebody Else"
Here's another song that hurts the soul. We've all had that gut feeling when we see an ex with someone else. It's as if someone has just ripped out your heart. It's painful and it feels like the world is coming down on you, but as we can see in The 1975's music video for this song, that pain truly comes from within, and you are the only one who can change that.
"I don't want your body, but I hate to think about you with somebody else."
8. "102"
Ok, so I'll say this is a bonus considering it's not by the 1975 but rather by Matty Healy. Having a crush on someone so intense you can see yourself with them when you're 102 years old is such an intensely dissatisfying feeling especially when that person has someone else. Every little thing they do just makes you fall for them even more, and no matter how much they love someone else you can't stop loving them.
"I like the way your face looks when you're yapping on about him."
9. "fallingforyou"
The beginning stages of falling in love. The honeymoon phase. The beauty. The passion. When every little thing is just so attractive and it makes your heart flutter. But that get's complicated when the person thinks of you as just a friend. You hope that maybe someday they'll feel the exact same way.
"I don't want to be your friend. I want to kiss your neck."
10. "Me"
I saved this song for last because I feel like it resonates so much with so many people. Depression is hardcore and The 1975 can present it in such a beautiful, delicate manner. In this song Matty is speaking to himself from an outsiders view or as his depression. There have been times in concert when he can't perform this song because it contains so much meaning about addiction, suicide, and family problems. We all go through different things, but we can all see the implications in this song and how they apply to us.
"I rather be getting high than watching my family die."
