Reign is the first show I binge-watched on Netflix and it is by far one of my favorites. If you are looking for a new show to watch or you are extremely tired of waiting for season eight of Game of Thrones (GOT), then you chose the right article. The show is similar to GOT because it too is filled with drama, action, crazy love triangles and dark forces. Reign follows the life of Mary Queen of Scots from the time she is 15 until her death and gives a real look at what being royal in the 16th century entailed.
If you are like me, then you grew up watching Disney princess movies and dreaming you were royalty, and GOT is just a little more morbid compared to the comforting "happy endings" we are used to. In the first season, Mary Stuart and her four ladies-in-waiting are introduced, along with her fiancé that she is unfamiliar with because she has only seen him as a young child, and it is light and fun. Although, as the show continues, the seasons become a lot darker. Each episode is filled with deceit, mysteries, happiness and sex (yet, not even close to the ridiculous amount shown in GOT). Reign did a good job at really pulling on my heartstrings because it vividly depicts all the political and personal struggles of young Queen Mary and her friends and foes. There were times while watching the show, where I was falling in love with the same characters she was crushing on and shedding tears over the same fictional situations she did.
Reign is based off a true story. There is a real Mary Queen of Scots and many of the show's storyline is based off events that actually took place in her lifetime.
If that still does not give you enough incentive to pop a bag of popcorn and log into Netflix to start the Reign series, then maybe this will: the show's main audience is women, and from beginning to end Mary never ceased to remind me how strong of a woman I can be. I felt empowered as a woman and as an individual after watching the show because it constantly reminded me that I can get through anything if I keep my morals strong and hold my ground as she did. Mary dealt with things many of us can relate to or may be struggling with such as heartbreaks, death and even rape. The circumstances she had to deal with (fictitious or not) were extremely tough, and yet she always found a way to handle them with dignity and grace.
So, whether you need a new show to keep you occupied while waiting for the next season of Game of Thrones, or a women role-model to help you feel confident, Reign should be your next Netflix addiction.
