My Reflections After Watching The Office

It's Weird To Think I Used To Hate The Show

I just finished the show The Office. Before I watched the whole series I hated the show. I didn’t like how the camera was shaky and how it wasn’t all that funny because it was just like real life. Nothing was that out of the normal it was just life. As I continued to watch the show, that’s exactly what I grew to like. The Office shows us exactly what we all fear in life. We fear being the outcast and weird, no one liking us, not having a home or finding a home in friends, not being able to love and not being loved by anyone, and how to say goodbye. Each character struggled with more than one of these fears and they all dealt with them differently. Goodbyes are extremely difficult especially when you have to tell the ones you love. A lot of the characters opted not to do it. Michael Scott left a day earlier than he told everyone he would, Jim when he transferred branches didn’t tell Pam, and Darrell tried to leave without saying goodbye as well.

The show grapples with what is acceptable and what should not be allowed in a workplace. It pushes everything to the limit where it is funny but also makes you think about how, yes, there is sexism, racism, different religious backgrounds, and different types of sexual attraction. All of things are addressed in one place we find it acceptable as Americans to have everyone not being seen as equals. There is a boss who gets paid the most and has the power to fire people. That changes the dynamic and causes friction for Michael because he so badly wants everyone to also be his friend. The Office makes you think about your life and your future. It helps you realize that your job is where you end up spending most of your life. You can hate it or you can love it but no matter what if that is the job you chose and are continuing to do, you are going to have to form relationships with the people around you.

They are whom you end up spending your life with. The Office is a well written, well acted, just all around good show and I never thought that I would say that. I watched the first couple seasons just trying it out and then by the final season I was just finishing out the show. The finale is truly where they struck gold. The characters all have evolved into the people that they want to be and it leaves the viewers with the fact that there is a future and the sun will shine after you get through your struggles that you have in life. So this is for those who didn’t think they would like The Office or don’t find that sense of humor all that funny. I’d say give it a complete chance because they are telling stories of lives and allow for you to reflect on your own.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
