Reflections: Evolution Of My Writing

"Above all else: to thine own self be true" (Hamlet, William Shakespeare)

While writing is a beautiful art of self-expression, there is always a risk of persecution for anyone who distributes their medium to the general public. More so than other art forms, writing especially receives the bulk of the blow because it's far more direct in nature.

A little while ago, I wrote an article regarding the silence surrounding sexual assault in Southeast Asian communities. Initially, I was a bit weary about coming forward with that piece, but the lack of conversation around an issue that affects 1 in every 3 women should not be ignored. By choosing to stay quiet, I saw myself as no better than those that completely dismissed it as an issue. Standing in the shadow over something I feel so strongly about was not an option. It was my most popular article, with the most shares and views, but it was also the most controversial in terms of feedback. Now, I'm very much appreciative and amazed that my family and close friends make up the base of my audience, but choosing to read my articles exposes yourself to my opinion and my side of the story. It is very hard to remove bias on pieces so personal, so readily disputed. Despite the repercussions, I will continue to write by my own principles.

Throughout this walk of life, the more you put yourself out in the world, you will increasingly face the risk of being judged by others. Two or three years ago, I would have never publicly talked about something so personal, but it's the personal stuff that matters most. When something is personal, it becomes real and that writing is far more powerful. I am proud of my articles like those. They speak to my character and make me feel as though I've left a mark on the world. Despite what my friends and family will day or do or think of me, I will stay true to me. Because at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself, what is it that you stand for? What are you willing to give up everything for? If you aren't rooted in anything so devotedly, you can be easily swayed by the world around you, often leaving you unhappy. Find what's worth fighting for and make that your center. As 2017 begins, I will continue to do so, even more than before and I urge everyone else to do the same. And as a side note, if anyone has any questions or concerns regarding any of my writings, my contact information is readily available to the public via Facebook, but I'll put it here as well:

Also here's a picture of succulents that I thought was super cute. Ta-da!

But also, subs to the people with negative comments, I have a lovely gif:

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.

15 Things That Happen On Your Birthday

Do you have a small get-together or throw a big bash?

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.
