THE PROBLEM

Some may not know what child abuse is.

Others may not know the signs of child abuse.

Others may not know who to contact to report abuse to.

This needs to change.


WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE

Physical maltreatment or sexual molestation of a child.

When a caregiver, parent, or guardian, causes injury, harm, risk of harm, or death to child by action or by failing to act.

The four most common types of child abuse are sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect.


SEXUAL ABUSE

any incident when an adult engages in a sexual act or exposes a minor to inappropriate sexual behavior or material as children are not legally capable of consenting.

about 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse.


WARNING SIGNS OF SEXUAL ABUSE

Pain during urination and/ or bowel movements

Bleeding, discharges or pain in mouth, genitals or anus

Sexually transmitted diseases

Torn or bloody underwear

Sleeping problems

Fear of certain people, places, activities

Bed wetting

Victimizing others

Suicidal thoughts or gestures


PHYSICAL ABUSE

Any physical act by a caregiver that results in a child being hurt or injured.

Second most common form of child abuse.


WARNING SIGNS OF PHYSICAL ABUSE

Bruising

Withdrawn

Fearful

Extreme behavior

Burns

Injuries where children don't usually become injured (back, neck, thighs, torso)


EMOTIONAL ABUSE

Caregivers failure to act, notice, attend to, or respond appropriate to a childs feelings.


WARNING SIGNS OF EMOTIONAL ABUSE

Speech disorders

Inability to play

Sleeping problems

Anti-social behavior

Behavioral extremes

Delays in emotional and intellectual growth


NEGLECT

The failure to meet a childs basic needs.

The most common form of child abuse in the U.S.

Includes a child being left hungry, dirty, without adequate forms of medical care, clothing or shelter.


WARNING SIGNS OF NEGLECT

Lack of medical care

Lack of dental care

Always dirty

Missing school often

Supervision lacking

Lack of proper nutrition

Alcohol or drug abuse by parents
