We created plastic to make our lives easier and provide affordability when it comes to technology, but how much plastic can we truly afford to keep using? In a recent news story, a plastic bag was found floating in the depths of Mariana’s Trench during a diving expedition. To hear our waste ending up not just in the gyres (Pacific Garbage Patch), but also in the most remote areas of the sea, is a scary wake-up call. We can’t run forever. When there are just as affordable products we can buy in comparison to plastic, the excuses we make and pressure we feel to save the planet lifts from our shoulders. It’s easier than ever to reduce your plastic footprint and this is how.

1. Get yourself a reusable water bottle.

Ever since I got myself a stainless steel reusable water bottle I make sure to never leave home without it. It’s easy to carry around and there are many areas that provide filtered stations to refill whether on campus or around the city. You get used to carrying your water bottle around like a second skin. The days where I forget to carry it are felt strongly when I’m thirsty and realize the only water available is carried in plastic.

2. Let the cashier know you don’t need a bag.

If you’re buying a bag of chips, you don’t need a bag. It’s become second nature to bag items at the register even if it’s completely unnecessary. The other day I went to buy mascara and a phone charger for my car. As the woman at the cash register reached for a bag, I politely declined and carried my items with me to the car. It doesn’t take much effort to carry a few items to the parking lot and you feel good knowing you aren’t being wasteful.

3. Bring your own reusable bag!

There are times when you will need a bag. Whether you’re grocery shopping for the week or just picking up more than you can carry on your own, consider buying reusable bags. They get the job done just as well. Not to mention, you're setting the right kind of trend. Trader Joe's also does a raffle for gift cards to promote shoppers to use plastic bags instead. Why not save the planet while getting extra money for groceries?

4. Pack your own lunch.

Not only does this option help you save money while eating healthier, but it also prevents the waste caused by one use items. When you go out to buy a meal you're also paying for the plastic utensils, containers, and cups that come with it.

5. Buy secondhand.

Here's another money saver like the one mentioned above. If you're looking for a television or any kind of appliance, try to find it secondhand. These items are just as durable, even more affordable, and prevent unnecessary mass production.

These are great places to start if you are looking for a way to lower your plastic footprint. They require minimal effort while also helping you save money. Give it a try!

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
