It feels like just yesterday we were taking finals for the end of last semester. Wow, does time truly fly by. Until May 24th, University of Delaware's student body will be pushing through finals. Instead of being home with your close friends and family who you haven't seen in months, us students get to live it up in the Morris Library.
While our friends are making plans to hang out and go out to eat with one another, you get to take finals. I know what you're thinking. We all have a severe case of FOMO, or fear of missing out.
On top of the several hours studying every day for finals, our phones are blowing up with text messages from the home friend group chat. We get so easily distracted from this. Of course you're going to feel somewhat jealous of them catching up without you, however, it's important to pay attention to your studies and academics right up until the end. Don't let this FOMO prioritize your life, especially during finals time. In reality, you're most likely not missing anything special at home worth your concern to fail finals.
As well as wishing that you were home, you'll tend to be distracted by other things on your phone too. A lack of focus can cause much upheaval and unnecessary anxiety. This will also just factor into more wasted time being distracted by your phone, especially during the most inconvenient times.
When was the last time you didn't have your phone on you? Or how often do you check your phone during dinner? In this century, technology has become such a huge necessity to have at all times of the day. In fact, most people in this generation are attached to their phones to the point where they become tense and antsy if it dies.
You're always hearing adults and elders saying how lucky they are they didn't grow up having such an attachment to something so minimal. Technology has doomed us all. We don't enjoy adventures anymore until we get that perfect aesthetically pleasing picture. We help to destroy society even further every time we go on social media.
Social media in addition to the FOMO makes almost everything impossible. Studying is at the back of our head during the most important time of the year. Here are four ways to help reduce these interruptions:
1. Put the group chat on do not disturb.
Putting your phone on 'do not disturb' will restrict notifications from popping up every 10 seconds. This will definitely help in your struggle of FOMO.
2. Don't bring your phone to the library, or turn your phone off.
As hard as it sounds, it's one of the most beneficial ways to reduce the constant interruption of your phone. Not having your phone on you for a few hours of the day will not only prevent you from being distracted, but also improve your lifestyle. It's much healthier to be attentive without the constant use of your cell phone.
3. Uninstall all of social media.
Social media is addicting. During times of finals, we get antsy, and once we start utilizing our phones, we can't put them down. If you uninstall all apps, you're life will be much easier.
4. Pick a place with the least amount of distractions.
Everyone has their own spot, whether it be a coffee shop, bookstore, or the library. Pick a place with the least amount of distractions. For many, this is the infamous Morris Library. Here, you'd feel guilty even looking at your phone while everyone surrounding you has their heads in books.
