I'm sure you've seen it. We've all seen it — a selfie of a girl with her luscious pursed duck lips posted on your Instagram feed with the caption as "wanderlust *insert tree emoji here.*" You probably even laughed at it for a while then continued scrolling. So here I am writing to tell you that the word wanderlust has been so underrated in the way it is used. Wanderlust is a real infatuation-an obsession, at that. The literal definition of wanderlust is "the irresistible, incurable desire to travel or wander." Aka an addiction to wandering. Aka a need to eat, sleep and drink adventure. Aka the feeling of I-need-to-leave-this-town-I'm-in-right-this-instant-and-explore-a-new-place-or-I'm-going-to-go-crazy.
I personally can tell you that wanderlust is the real deal, it consumes you. It leaves you constantly filled with this craving to go somewhere new and explore (even trespassing on occasions — yeah I'm guilty). Every day, you find yourself sitting in class and thinking "Why am I here?" followed by daydreams about where you could be instead of here.
Whenever I have been in the same place for too long, I begin to feel suffocated in a sense, or crowded in a plethora of sadness. My college town is great and all, but think about how much more there is to see — foggy snow tipped mountains, fields of flowers, pines of all shapes and sizes, winding roads, abandoned houses and beaches that are 50 shades of blue.
So, next time you're in the hallway headed to class and your best friend Sam stops you and says, hey let's leave for Tennessee in 10 minutes. Pack your bag and do it. Even if you have things to do, just go. That's how life is supposed to be lived — breathing the fresh air along different state lines, jamming to Ben Rector with the windows down, stopping in the middle of nowhere to watch the stars at 4 a.m. and being overwhelmed by genuine freedom. That feeling, my friends, is more powerful than any degree or any occupation. To me, life is not fully lived unless you go out of your way to actually make it happen.
I urge you to travel as far and widely as you can and meet people and learn how they live life. If you don't get anything else from this article, get this catchy little jingle I just made up and engrave it in your brain — you grow when you go. Let's start putting down our wanderlust captions and maybe pick up some road map instead.
And so, the adventure begins.
Let's redefine wanderlust.
