Redefining Forever 21's Idea of Plus Size

A size 12 is plus size, you're joking right?

Redefining Forever 21's Idea of Plus Size

Oh, Forever 21 how I love you. Your cheap prices and cute clothes always allow me to buy the latest fashions. I guess that is why they call you fast fashion because quantity over quality, am I right? I love your prices, but I hate what you stand for. While my morals tell me no, my bank account tells me yes. I do have one question for you though Forever 21, what is up with your "plus size" section? I mean props to you for actually having a plus size section unlike most teen and young adult stores, but are you seriously considering a size 12 a "plus size." Come on guys, you can do better than that considering that we are talking about "junior" sizes here. Not only are you calling a size 12 plus size, but your also making all of your sizes smaller anyways to fit junior sizing.

Forever 21 is known for its massive stores that seemingly never end. I mean seriously, you could lost in some of those stores for hours sorting through clothes. While the plus size selection has gotten better with time, it's still not nearly close to the selection that the straight sizes are. Usually it's one or two rooms at the most. Usually it's also clearly labeled as "PLUS SIZE." Like ok I get it, you have to label the different lines of clothing that you carry. But did you ever stop and think how embarrassing it is to have to go to the small "plus size" section to get a size 12 while your friends shop in the straight sizes? Not only do you have to go in the plus size section, they don't even have the same clothes that the straight section has. I mean the clothes are still cute, but why can't I buy the same skirt in a size 12 as someone in a size 4? Just because it's a size 12 would it just magically not look as good on me?

While most of the clothes are designed nicely, some just look like potato sacks. I mean you expect poor quality for the most part when you buy from Forever 21, but why should I have to wear a sack that doesn't do anything for me? Sorry, I didn't know that you had to be a certain size to be confident enough to pull off a form fitting dress. Some of the designs are also horrendous. I didn't know that just because I am labeled as plus size that that means that I suddenly enjoy looking like a grandma going to church on Sunday morning. The entire time your shopping, you have pictures of beautiful models staring down at you. The models are undeniably beautiful, but they just aren't a good representation of true plus size. You're basically telling girls that a normal size 12 is plus size and that if they want to wear your "normal" clothes they need to lose weight. Last time I checked though, size doesn't equal beauty. Please learn that Forever 21.

Forever 21, you're basically telling young girls that if they look like these beautiful, healthy models than they should be considered plus size. Not that plus size isn't beautiful because it obviously is, but why do you need to put a label on young girls? Why do you feel the need to empress upon them that they are "plus size" and have to shop in their own, small section in the back of the store? Not only are they shopping in a small section while their friends are shopping throughout the entire store, but they also have these beautiful models staring down at them making them question their own bodies. You're basically making these girls think that they aren't good enough to wear your normal sizes. "Oh, you're a size 12? Sorry, honey. You need to go the back and shop in your own section here."

Forever 21, please reconsider your sizing in the plus size section. Why should a size 12 be considered a "plus size" to you? Why can't you extend your straight sizes and get rid of the label "plus size" altogether. Then everyone could shop your entire store and wear the same clothes. It's just not fair. No young girl deserves to feel bad about their bodies. Instead, you should be empowering women. By labeling women, you're ultimately telling them what they can wear and what they can't. So please, let's stop making girls feel bad for being "plus size." Let's empower each other. Let's encourage each other to have the confidence to wear what we want. Let's stop labeling everything. Both straight size and plus size women are beautiful. Size shouldn't define you or your fashion throughout life. It shouldn't be an obstacle to your self expression.

Forever 21, please reconsider your sizing. As I've said before, I applaud you for even having a plus size section to begin with. Your clothes are cheap and fashionable, which attracts young girls to you from across the world. In the meantime, please remember that being plus size doesn't mean that you aren't beautiful and that you shouldn't continue to express yourself through your own unique fashion choices. Instead, take the label of "plus size" and turn it into something beautiful and empowering. As for me, I guess I'll continue to shop in the "plus size" section of Forever 21 and hold out hope that one day there will be no difference between straight sizes and plus sizes.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
