First off, yes I am a Red Sox fan. Always have been and I always will be. And due to that fact, I am disappointed. A lot. The Red Sox have this nasty habit of raising our hopes to an insurmountably high level and dropping them off a cliff. There begins the first of many similarities I share with Cubs fans.
For all you fans of the Cubbies, I feel you. I really do. I mean we went 86 years without the trophy. We are the only ones close to you guys. But we did it and so can you guys, so there is hope. After all, if you guys do win this year or anytime in the near future, I think it can be pretty well concluded that the real hero is your general manager Theo Epstein. He was also the Red Sox general manager in the years leading up to 2004 and managed to take the Bo Sox and turn them into a really good team in ’03 and World Series team in ’04. Now it’s your turn to have him.
So why I am rooting for the Cubs? Well, first of all, I understand them. From my perspective, very few teams can actually claim to somewhat understand what it’s like. Red Sox fans can and also anyone from Cleveland. However, considering that the Indians are in the World Series, sorry Cubs fans, I think you’re stuck with just the Red Sox fans.
Also, they deserve it! It’s been ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT YEARS! If you haven’t seen the seemingly endless lists of “Things that have happened since the Cubs won the World Series,” let me refresh your memory. Someone born on the day the Wright Brothers first took off would not yet have turned five when the Cubs last won. That was a long, long time ago. I don’t think there’s anyone, save maybe White Sox fans, that won’t say the Cubs are due. They just aren’t due whenever your favorite team is playing.
Finally, they can’t win next year! The Red Sox are going to win next year! Sorry Cubs, I don’t like you guys THAT much. I am, after all, still, a Red Sox fan even if the Red Sox insist on breaking the hearts of us Red Sox fans, we still will be no matter what. But that’s why I respect Cubs fans. I know quite a few Cubs fans and I can’t say I have ever met a “bandwagon” Cubs fan. You guys are the real deal and I respect that. We have that much in common. Both our teams let us down a lot, but we always stick with them. Even if being a fan means more seasons ended with “maybe next year” then “let’s do it again,” we still love our teams.
So, to wrap it up, I want to see the Cubs win and they deserve it! So please don’t disappoint! I think that whether you want the Cubs to win this year or not if they do I think we can forgive "Back to the Future" for being one year off.
