This poem was written for my form and technique of poetry class. It is written (mostly) in syllabic verse with each line holding ten syllables. Enjoy.
Cars speeding past in a blur of shiny
metal. The sun burning hot reflecting
off shards of broken glass. Thick summer air
filling with smoke. The smell of gasoline
emptying onto the pavement. Blue and
red flashing lights reflecting in the
rearview mirror. Screeching tires, blaring
horns echoing against the glass. Speeding
ambulances flying up the shoulder,
dodging the miscellaneous cars.
The wounded and dead being carried
away. Bystanders on cellphones capturing
their departure. Walking over white blocks
painted on the asphalt. The air stagnant,
the world spinning in slow motion. Until,
the light turns green, gas petals hit the floor,
and each car rolls forward, driving away.
