The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a vintage rock band of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. After releasing Stadium Arcadium in 2006, the RHCP waited 5 years to release their next album, I'm With You, in 2011. On June 17, 2016, the RHCP finally released their eleventh studio album, The Getaway.
The Getaway is everything you would expect to find in a RHCP album plus new sounds brought in by producer Danger Mouse. The band's four members - Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, and Josh Klinghoffer - have worked with Danger Mouse to revamp the iconic RCHP sound, replete with plenty of references to California, incredible guitar and bass solos, and beautiful lyrics.
In an interview with BBC Radio 2, Anthony Kiedis explained that the album is based around "a two-year relationship that completely fell apart like a nuclear bomb." He explains that the content of the album "comes from love of life and love of life’s tragedies and successes and hurts and triumphs and I don’t know, the kind of psychedelic mystery of nature can be found in the lyrics."
The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their single, "Dark Necessities," on May 5. "Dark Necessities" became the band's 25th top 10 single on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart, extending the record for most top 10s on that list that they hold over U2. The song speaks about the creativity and light that emerge from our dark sides and the internal struggles that others fail to see. The music video, directed by actress Olivia Wilde, was released on the 17th of June and features Flea rocking out with his bass in a sink and an eternally shirtless Anthony Kiedis.
The Getaway World Tour began on June 4 with festival dates that will continue through August. The band's European headlining tour will begin in Budapest on September 1 and continue through 2016. The band's North American headlining tour will begin in January of 2017.
The album is available on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, and Apple Music.
