A Recruitment Week Survival Kit

15 things to bring to the house for recruitment.

A Recruitment Week Survival Kit

It is finally here: sorority recruitment. It’s time for bright eyed PNMs to line up outside of the houses and actives to line up inside of the houses. It’s time for chants, songs, and skits/videos. It’s time to put on a smile and sell yourself or your sorority. It’s going to be a long week but a rewarding one. Bid day is the finish line and it is so close. If you read my article last week about a work week survival kit, you’ll notice some similarities in this one. This survival kit is geared towards the actives since a couple weeks ago I wrote an article geared towards PNMs but if you are a PNM this list might come in handy for you too. Here are some helpful things to bring to the house this week in a recruitment survival kit.

  1. Advil. Any kind of headache medicine will be super helpful this week with the loud chanting/ singing and long conversations. Anyone who has been through recruitment before on either side is familiar with how loud it gets in the houses. Advil is a must.
  2. Coffee. The days are going to be longer than work week so you are really going to need that extra boost of energy in the morning.
  3. Snacks. Hangry girls are no fun to talk to so make sure to bring a little something to hold you over for in-between rounds.
  4. Mints. To keep your breath fresh.
  5. Marshmallows and cough drops. All the chanting/singing and loud conversations are bound to strain your voice. Both of these are useful for sore throats.
  6. Band aids. Just in case your shoes start to hate you after the tenth party. Blisters have a way of ruining a mood and band aids are super helpful.
  7. Small hair brush. To keep your hair on point for each party.
  8. Small deodorant. To keep you smelling fresh for each party.
  9. Tissues. In the words of one of my favorite sisters, MG “for sweat and tears”. Tissues have multiple purposes and can be really helpful in blotting sweat, blowing your nose, or wiping your tears.
  10. A mini fan. It is going to get really hot in the house and a little fan can help cool you off in-between parties
  11. A smile. Remember how nervous you were as a PNM so give them a smile to reassure them that you are happy that they are here. Though the days are long ones there is nothing you should want more than for a PNM to feel comfortable in your house. A simple smile can accomplish just that.
  12. Make up. For touch ups in-between parties to look your best for each one.
  13. A sweatshirt or blanket. On the off chance it gets cold in your house in-between rounds or you aren’t recruiting one round. This is usually not the case as you are hot from being around a lot of people but there is no harm in being extra prepared.
  14. Water. It is really important to keep yourself hydrated each day. You are going to lose a lot of water this week so make sure to drink up.
  15. Hand sanitizer. To keep germs away since you’ll be around a lot of people in one week.

Best of luck to all the houses and PNMs this week! I can't wait to meet the Fall 15' pledge class.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
