How to Survive Formal Recruitment

I just went through a week of formal recruitment for my sorority. Let me tell you that my sorority has a strict attendance policy. I would like to tell you what I learned from my experience this past week.

  • Firstly, do NOT take your physical or mental health lightly. They are extremely important to both recruitment AND your classes.
  • It’s okay to ask questions before recruitment. Don’t ever feel embarrassed to ask questions to whoever is running your recruitment week. They want it to go just as smoothly as you do.
  • GET SLEEP. I slept for 17 hours on Saturday. Genuinely, from 6 p.m. on Saturday until 12 p.m. on Sunday, I was unconscious. Even if recruitment ends at 2 a.m., do not skip on your sleep! Take naps throughout the day if you have to.
  • DON’T SKIP ON YOUR HOMEWORK. Recruitment is not an excuse for poor grades.
  • Talk to someone if you’re stressed out. I bottled up all of my emotions this week because I was so worried about recruitment, and I wound up exploding from all the feelings. This is something important to remember for ANY week, and not just recruitment week!

Finally, HAVE FUN. Recruitment is about getting new sisters (or brothers) and having as much fun as you can!

But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
