Record shops are a hard thing to come by now a-days. Due to the success of iTunes and Amazon, almost anyone can get pretty much instant gratification for any of their music needs. I agree that having the ability to buy anything on your computer without even getting dressed, has its advantageous, but it's missing the fun. I love walking into stores not knowing what I want or what I might find, and that's the best part.
One of the only good record stores left in NJ, is Scotti's in Summit which is part of Union County. Not only does the store have records, but they also have posters, band memorabilia and movies. Most of the time they have sales or discount on merchandise, as well as used goods.
The owner is a very approachable guy who, if you visit the store as frequently as I do, will remember your name. He and his employs have recommendations for the week up, as well as individual opinions on what to buy. They also can order and quickly obtain anything not in stock.
The store itself is pretty sweet looking- spray paint on the back entrances, old vinyl and t-shirts lined up against the back wall, as well as a large yellow submarine hanging up. If that doesn't make you wanna buy something, nothing will.
Scotti's has an average review on yelp of 4.4 stars out of five, and has received a large amount positive review from customers and writers. If there are any negative reviews ,the owner replies to it, and does anything he can to improve your experience
Don't just take my word for it, Neil Ferguson of Glide Magazine stated "Any business that stays open for over fifty years safely earns the status of being an institution. Any record store that stays in business for this long earns the status of hero. Nestled between Summit Ski & Sport and the Bow Tie Beacon Cinema along the store-lined Springfield Ave in Summit, New Jersey, Scotti’s Record Shop is exactly what comes to mind when you think about a neighborhood record shop. The store was opened by the Scotti's family in 1956, and in 1981 Gary Scotti's went to work full time for his dad after finishing college. He continues to run the store today".
Scotti's has been open for over fifty years. I bought my first record here when I was around twelve years old, and I hope anyone positive about music has the same experience I did. The important influence of music stores and the culture they bring to each neighborhood, should not be neglected. Sustaining, small business like these, keep towns interesting and fresh, and adds a certain spice to areas filled with expensive clothing stores and mediocre restaurants.
