On Saturday, January 14th, 2017 the SEC rivalry between the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs took place in the newly renovated O'Connell Center. According to floridagators.com, Coach Mike White said, "We need to be on edge." Mission accomplished! It was an intense basketball game for both sides- leaving the fans not just in the arena speechless and sitting on the edge of their seats with anticipation but in living rooms as well. This overtime victory for the Gators was a crucial win before going on the road to South Carolina. Saturday night's win for the Gators was their 5th consecutive SEC win this season, which left the Bulldogs to their 14th consecutive loss in Gainesville. How did the Gators go from an eight-point deficit in the second half to winning in overtime?
In the post-game discussion with Chris Harry and Mitch Gerber on floridagators.com, they discussed how Florida had a slow start in the first half, but fought for a lead in the second half by the help of the Gators bench and shooting from the line. I thought it was an interesting point because coaches often use running in practice to illustrate the importance free throws have in a game- but it was reality for the Gators Saturday afternoon. As was mentioned in the post-game discussion, not only did the game depend on the free throws that ultimately tied the game, but the bench contributed to a big part of the victory by putting points on the board. The scoring from Canyon Barry and Keith Stone made the game exciting to watch. Barry scored 27 points while Stone made a basketball career-high with 17 points. Together they not only kept up with the Bulldogs defense, but put the Gators over the "edge" to come out with a 80-76 victory on their home court. As a spectator, I'm excited to see what happens this week in South Carolina and the rest of the season for the Florida Gators.
