Are you looking for a replacement now that you've finished binge-watching shows like "Breaking Bad" or "Boardwalk Empire?" Possibly looking for something good that's also British? Peaky Blinders, a BBC crime drama currently on Netflix will certainly be the next thing to grab your heart and attention as you binge it this upcoming weekend.
1. The atmosphere
There's something magical about shows that can completely pull you into their world, not just into the struggles that the characters may be facing, but an entire universe that pulls you in and can almost make you understand what it's like to live in it. Set in Birmingham, England, the year 1919, we are introduced to the Peaky Blinders, a street gang headed by the Shelby family. Peaky Blinders takes place in a different part of the English social ladder. Birmingham is a tough place, with tough people, it's a cloudy, dirty industrial town full of people working just to be able to put food on the table. A place where only the strong survive.
2. The family
With the leaders being the Shelby family, the Peaky Blinders aren't so much as a local gang as so much as it's a Shelby gang. There's Arthur, who's tough and menacing but yet somehow lovable and fun. Thomas (Tommy) is the brains (and looks) of the operation, he's stoic, charming and confident. Jon is fun, eager, and still young. There's Ada, the rebellious sister and Aunt Polly Gray, who has seen it all and is much of a leader as Tommy. This is a family that will do whatever it takes to help each other, they will make it to the top and they'll do it together.
3. The Style
For a group of shady gangsters, they sure do dress well.
4. Cillian Murphy/ Tommy Shelby
Seriously, Cillian Murphy does a spectacular job in his portrayal of Tommy Shelby. The paradox of Tommy being that you can feel you know him but at the same time he's a complete mystery, what is he really thinking? Tommy is an old fashioned gangster, charming, intelligent, cunning, and loved.
