A list of excuses as to why I am not ready for spring break.

Ahh, it's that time of the year that we all look forward to—Spring Break! The week of the year where students of all ages take some time to relieve the stress of midterms in a variety of ways. From trips to Florida with new college friends to trips back home to see your furry friend you’ve only seen on FaceTime since winter break. (Hopefully, I am not the only one who FaceTimes their dog … ) Whatever the break consists of, the topic of that “spring break body” keeps finding its way into conversation, but do not worry. I am a champion of making excuses and have compiled my top five reasons why my body isn’t beach ready!

1. Spring Break is so flippin' early

In high school, spring break fell the week before or after Easter. The temperature was higher, the water was warmer and the animals were out of hibernation. In college; however, it’s still a bit chilly outside, and I haven’t had enough time to lose all the hibernation weight I put on!

2. DINING HALLS!

Thanks to the unlimited bakery selection at City Bistro and Liberty Fresh Foods, I was able to prepare for winter like a bear! Chocolate chip cookies and cheese pizza never seem like a bad choice until Spring Break sneaks up on you.

3. Schoolwork

Yes, the very thing we need a break from is the reason I am not “break” ready. Spending hours on the third floor of the library where the sun could not kiss my face even if it was shining directly on me keeps my body from getting that healthy glow. Or typing away on a computer whose screen is filled with pictures of cells in mitosis means I have no time to develop an epic Spring Break itinerary.

4. Extra-curricular activities

The hobbies one picks up in college might result in a not-so-hot body. Whether these pastimes are of the less than legal variety (no examples necessary), or they are clean and sober, like the gaming club, both mean that the gym doesn’t always fit into the schedule!

(The hobby depicted above might be slightly illegal but will, most likely, result in a beach body!)

5. To make your pet feel better

Just like me, my dog put on some weight over the winter. Therefore, I am choosing to not get a “beach bod” because I don’t want my dog to be jealous and resent me. The more of him there is to love over break, the happier I am!

Maybe next year around this time I will have learned my lesson and be more prepared for Spring Break! Regardless, I am going to embrace what I’ve got now because once I am on the beach, everything is a “Beach Body!”

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
