Reasons Why November Is The Best Month

All the other months wish they were as great as November

Reasons Why November Is The Best Month

Fall is rife with crisp and cool air, colorful leaves, hot drinks and some of the best holidays of the year. According to some people's arguments, possibly mine included, fall is the best time of year. My personal favorite fall month, and my favorite month of the whole year, is far and away November. It starts while we're all still riding out the Halloween sugar high and ends with Thanksgiving festivities and Christmas decorating. Really, what more could you ask from a month? Here are some of the reasons why November is arguably the best month of the year.

1. Changing Leaves

For most of the country this begins in October, and possibly as soon as September. However, I live in South Carolina, where summer doesn't really end until mid-October. November always brings gorgeous orange and red landscapes.

2. Crunchy Leaves

So the leaves have changed. The next logical step is that they fall to the ground, where they dry out in the cool air and patiently wait to be joyously stepped on. Real talk, I will go out of my way to step on a crunchy leaf. That's how much I love fall.

3. Cider

Hot apple cider is the best thing that has ever happened to beverages. That is all.

4. Football

Now, I know that regular-season football also happens in 2 other months of the year. However, November football is special for many fans because of the intense rivalry games that happen the last Saturday of November. For instance, the Carolina vs. Clemson game, or Texas vs. OU weekend. These games can determine bragging rights for an entire year, so you could say there are some pretty high stakes.

5. Apple Picking In The Mountains

See number one regarding the gorgeous orange and red landscape. There is perhaps no better place to view the changing leaves than the mountains, where, serendipitously, there are many apple orchards where you can pick your own bushel of red delicious, gala or pink lady apples. You could honestly hit three of the reasons on this list with one trip to the mountains, because at these apple orchards you can drink hot apple cider out of a cup shaped like an apple. Just a PSA. I'm an advocate for hot apple cider.

6. Sweaters

As aforementioned, South Carolina basically has two settings, hot and freezing -- the latter of which only lasts for around three months. With any luck, this change occurs in November, when one can wear a sweater all day and not be uncomfortably hot by lunch. And, really, who doesn't love sweaters? It's like the socially acceptable version of wearing a blanket. Sweaters are the perfect cozy complement to cool weather, and also excellent real estate to remind everyone about whatever holiday is coming up.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
