Reasons Why I Loved Going To Grandma's House

Reasons Why I Loved Going To Grandma's House

We all have someone who we really care about, whether it is a friend or a family member. One person in my life who I care about a lot is my Grandma. She is going to be 88-years-old this year and I am happy that she is still here. I always loved going to her house. Here are some reasons why I loved going to her house.

I was always in snack heaven.

At my own house, we would have some snacks, but when we arrived at Grandma's, she always had the good snacks. She had everything: cookies, cheezits, pretzels, potato chips, popcorn, nachos and fruit loops. Sometimes I ask myself how I did not gain weight from all the snacks that I ate.

We went over once a week.

Going to Grandma's house was always special because we would come over once a week. Sundays were always the days when we would come over. My family would eat dinner at home and then it was time to go see Grandma from 7:00 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m.

The extended family was over.

Not only did my family come over, but my extended family came over too. It was always my two aunts and my uncle. We all had our "assigned seats" and, even though it was sometimes crammed, I did not care. I mean, we're all family, so it was OK to be close.

We had old toys to play with.

My Grandma had three girls (one of them is my mom). Even though they are much older now, my Grandma still had their old toys. There was this huge kitchen toy that my mom and aunts would play with. My brothers and I played with it all of the time when we were little. We did not care if it was considered to be a "girl" toy. It was always fun to play with that kitchen.

It was the place to be for holidays/birthdays.

There was no question as to which house we would go to for the holidays, other than Christmas. Christmas was always at my aunt's house. Grandma's house was the place to be for a lot of birthdays, the Super Bowl, New Years Day, Easter, the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Thanksgiving.

We had amazing hugs and kisses.

Every time when I went over to my Grandma's house, I always got the best hugs and kisses from her. A lot of people would think that Grandma kisses were the worst, but not me. For someone her age, she was a very strong hugger.

It was the place to sleep over at before a family arrival.

At least for me, I slept over at my Grandma's house before my brothers were born. I loved staying there because she had one thing for breakfast that I loved so much: Eggo Waffles. You cannot go wrong with Eggo Waffles for breakfast.

It was a history lesson.

One thing that is really cool about my Grandma's house is the day that she moved in. My Grandma and Grandpa moved into that house on the day that JFK was assassinated. My grandparents were excited to move into the house, but were shocked by what happened to the President of the United States.

She always had the fridge stocked with drinks.

My mom was never a fan of us drinking pop. My Grandma always had a fridge full of pop. It was usually caffeine-free Pepsi, which was probably a good idea for the kids. Along with pop, she always had a shelf full of beer. My Grandma is a beer drinker and still has an occasional beer, even at her age.

It was the place to talk about weekly events.

Well, we had to talk about something when we would come to Grandma's house. We all talked about our week and what happened, along with our plans for the following week. Sometimes the talks would turn into debates and even arguments. Don't worry, the arguments were clean and non-physical.

She always had sports on the TV.

It was just like how it is at home. I watched sports at home and I watched sports at Grandma's. We watched anything like the Indians, the Cavaliers, and whatever football game was playing on Sunday night. It was great for me, but I'm not sure how the females in the family felt about it?

We got back rubs and back scratches.

Moms are always great when it comes to back rubs and back scratches, but when Grandma would do it, I was in heaven. Grandma back rubs and back scratches lasted longer and they were amazing. Now that I think about it, I would not mind one right now.

The backyard and field were great.

My Grandma didn't have the biggest backyard, but it was large enough to play with a ball or to play cornhole. When I was really young, she used to have a pool which was always fun to go in during the summer time. Not only was there the backyard, but there was a huge open field in the back. It was a huge field along with a baseball field. We always played on the field and played baseball. The baseball field was not the greatest, but it was great to be able to use a baseball and not just a tennis ball.

We made the best memories there.

People always have a place that they go to where memories are made. My Grandma's house was the place to make those memories. One of my favorite memories is of a time when I was grabbing something upstairs and then I tripped and completely rolled down the stairs. Thankfully, I was OK, but it was kind of funny.

My Grandma lived in that house from 1963-2015. I think that it is amazing to see someone live in a house for 55 years! After my Grandpa passed away and my Grandma's health became a problem, it was too much for her to take care of the house. She is now living in an assisted living center and she really likes it. She talks to a few people and goes to some of the activities that are involved like Bingo. You might have a different story about your Grandma and the time that you spent with her, but I will never forget the memories that I had at her house.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
