Reasons Why I Love Chicago

Chicago, is the city that I will always call home and love immensely.

Recently, I just went back to Chicago to visit my city and as I was taking my friend, who is born and raised in California, I realized how much I love the city. I have been to many other major cities in the United States and even other countries, but there’s something about Chicago that makes its way to the top of the list. Maybe it’s the smell of the food, maybe it's the wind, maybe the architecture, or maybe it’s just the millions of pigeons roaming the streets without a care in the world. Here are the reasons why I love Chicago.

1. The view

Nothing can compare to Chicago’s skyline, whether it is during the day or at night time. The tall skyscrapers throughout the city contain a mixture of modern architecture and Gothic European style. As you walk the city, you can sight many different movies sites. Lying between all the buildings is the Chicago River. On the Chicago River, you can take boats to tour the city or just simply kayak with your friend towards Lake Michigan

2. The Food

I love Food. Chicago is a great city for foodies. There are just a million of choices to choose from. I was in Chicago for a week and I didn’t even have time to go to all the places I wanted to go to. I advise everyone to buy stretchy pants while visiting because, you will for sure gain a few pounds. There is the famous deep dish pizza, and Chicago dog, Italian roast beef, but there are also a bunch of restaurants that are unique and has a great view.

3. Things to do

There’s always new places opening up, and new places to explore. There are free movie screenings at the Millennium Park on Tuesdays during the summer. Fireworks from Navy Pier, and you can’t forget about all the museums in the city. But besides all the normal spots that people visit, you have Wicker Park where you can spend a whole day in a bookstore getting lost in another world or try a new bakery or donut shop in the city.

4. Easy to navigate

The L will save your life. One CTA ticket is all you need and you will be going from north to south. Just hop on that train and go anywhere you want to go. Side note, there is a way to cheat the Red Line at the Chinatown stop, and just a warning, watch out for the vicious pigeons hanging around the CTA entrances, you never know when you will be attacked.

5. People

The people in the city. Maybe I am bias, but I love the people in Chicago and I love the vibe that they give me. Whenever I am in the city, I just feel like I am home and that I am happy. Smiles will appear on my face for no particular reason. Sometimes everyone is in their suit and tie moving from one place to another, you will see adults and kids running to Union Station to catch the train home. You will see friends just walking around with a cup of Starbucks catching up just sitting on the bench, taking the view in. The people can keep the city busy or it can give it a really relaxing feel.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
