Knitting is the holy grail of stress relief and empty void fulfillment. Rest assured; it's not just for grannies and hipsters. Stitch by stitch, knitting can solve a majority of the world's problems...well some of them. While many people look at knitting as a mindless activity, us knitters see it as much more. So why take up knitting?

1. Knitting reduces stress

Imagine this: the only thing you need to focus on is making the next stitch. You'll learn how to take life one stitch at a time; it's like turning your brain off and just focusing on the present. Unless you're a knitting guru like my Grandma who can multitask while knitting.

2. Cheap, quality gifts anyone?

Let's face it, gifts are expensive. Christmas alone breaks the bank, but that's why knitting is your opportunity to save some dimes. Knit up some beanies for the winter and you got yourself Christmas presents that only cost you some yarn and manual labor. Plus, you'll definitely win brownie points if you take the time to knit DIY gifts for your pals.

3. On the hunt for the perfect pattern? Just knit it.

On the hunt for the perfect pattern? The only problem is that you can't find it anywhere because it's in your head, am I right? Hours of shopping both online and in stores; no sign of the pattern. But if you learn to knit, you can craft that pattern with your own two hands. Plus, if it's super cool, you can sell your creation so you can quit your job and take up knitting! (Just kidding, keep your job).

4. You'll feel productive

Netflix is a root cause of unproductivity...well at lease my unproductivity. But knitting happens to alleviate this issue! Watch your favorite shows and knit up a storm at the same time. Plus, when you finish, you'll feel like you accomplished something big. See mom, Netflix can be productive.

5. The knitting community is nice

Wanna make friends with chill people who seem to not have a worry in the world? Get involved in the knitting community. These people come from all different walks of life. Ask around, your co-worker or the kid who sits next to you in English might be a knitter. The knitting community is diverse, but rest assured, you won't regret getting involved in it.

What are you waiting for? It's productive medicine, you'll make some cool stuff while alleviating your stress. Plus, unlike other hobbies, knitting is harmless. Just don't sit on your needles or mistake your cat for a ball of yarn. And the best part? You get to see your friends (and mom) wear around your very own creations, what better hobby is there? So pick up some needles and get to it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
