Ah, summer, my favorite season. Summer is a time for relaxation and exploration. Times are tough and it seems like all we think about is saving money. But, what we don't realize is that you don't have to be rolling in dough to have a great time. Check out these activities, right here in North Carolina, that are inexpensive or maybe even free. Yes, I said FREE.

1. Head to the coast and soak up some sun.

One of North Carolina's best qualities is the Outer Banks. Get a group of friends or family to split gas. Grab some dollar snacks and beverages at a convenience store and hop in the car for beautiful beach day! From Wilmington to Nag's Head, beaches are always public and free. No matter where you're located, a beach day is within feasible distance...you might just have to set your alarm a bit early.

2. Dance and enjoy live music.

Locations vary for musical festivals all throughout this state, but there is always one someone nearby. From talented country, bluegrass, and even local hip-hop artists showcase their talents, free of charge. The U.S. National Whitewater Centerin Charlotte hosts free concerts every Thursday and Saturday nights all summer long!

3. Go chasing waterfalls.

TLC had it all wrong. DO go chasing waterfalls and the beauty that comes with it. Although, a hike may be in order to reach some of these marvelous parts of nature. North Carolina is home to more than 250 waterfalls scattered throughout the state. Go find your favorite!

4. Take a day drive and hike on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

You might have to lift the couch cushions for gas money and food...but trust me, it is totally worth it. Listed on America's Top Ten Best Drives list, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a great way to spend a Sunday or a weekend. Breathtaking views, amazing overlooks, and hiking trails right off the parkway are your keys to a successful nature adventure, here. Oh and like before, the magnificent waterfalls? This has got plenty of those too!

5. Step back in time and take a historic tour.

Being the 12th out of 50 states, grants us with a lot of important landmarks. History dwells within every corner of North Carolina, whether it's the state museums, Civil War battlefields, or the enormous aged lighthouses. Dive deep into the past and choose one of many historic sites to explore, most of the time, for no charge.

6. Shop local at a farmer's market or in a unique shopping district.

Now, this is all about cheap activities, so maybe consider "window shopping", but nevertheless, local farmer's markets are full of delicious food and hidden treasures. Be sure to check out Ninth Street Shopping Districtin Durham. North Carolina's merchandise and fresh produce offers plenty to tourists, even for those who aren't interested in emptying their wallets. And who knows, maybe you will come across a deal that you can't refuse!

7. Ride out to the country, camp, and make a wish on a star.

Living in the city is great, but all that smog and light pollution builds up, and eventually, we forget what an actual night sky looks like. The moon is big and bright and North Carolina is full of "middle of nowhere" locations that will give you the perfect view. Pitch a tent, grab a blanket, and maybe even, invite a cute date.

8. Get hungry and go "food trucking".

North Carolina cities are full of numerous types of food trucks. They’re outside sporting events and breweries, drawing crowds along popular city thoroughfares, and huddled together along pedestrian-friendly walkways. In some cases, they have become destinations in and of themselves. Be sure to check out one of my favorites, Parlez-Vous Crêpe, who floats through Greensboro and surrounding areas with their mouthwatering crepes. Yum!

Looking for adventure and not breaking the bank is as simple as that list. Of course, get your gas money ready, but that's literally it.

Although always remember, travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.
