It's the best school around.

Iowa State University is an incredible school that many of us are lucky enough to attend. (36,660 of us, actually). Over breaks, particularly summer, I come to miss the place that I spend most of my time and I really have started to call home. I guess distance makes the heart grow fonder. There are more reasons than I can list about why I love Iowa State, but here are just some worth naming:

1. Campus

Iowa State has one of the most beautiful campuses (We even ranked 5th out of 25 of the Most Beautiful College Campuses). Even simply walking across campus can brighten your day and make you appreciative of where you get to go to school every day.

2. Unique Study Spots

A super cool thing about Iowa State is that there is no shortage of places to find unique, interesting and cool study spots year round. If the weather is good, hammocks tend to be the place of choice, and even if the weather is not permitting, there is no shortage of cool places to study, read, and relax on campus.

3. Seasonal change

Winter

Spring

Summer

Fall

One of my absolute favorite things about Iowa State and it's gorgeous campus is that you get to experience absolutely every season in its entirety. The campus, while always beautiful, changes so drastically throughout the year and is always interesting and captivating.

4. Library

I know this one sounds strange, but the library at Iowa State is perfect for whatever mood you're in, whether that's studying with friends and a coffee, or studying alone in the periodicals. From puppies during dead week, to being open 24/7 during important times, there's a lot to be said about the library.

5. Traditions

Iowa State has so many traditions that make attending the school just that little bit more fun. Although they're not seen in everyday life, Iowa State has traditions that have lasted for generations; from not stepping on the zodiac, to kissing under the campanile at midnight, just to name two.

6. Football Season

Historically we do not have a good football team, however the atmosphere and school spirit from the students and supporters is always surprising and present despite this. The student section still fills up, the tailgates are still intense and we still go all out on game-day, even if it means we are prepared for a loss.

7. Basketball Season

Basketball season is always a thrill at Iowa State, especially as a win is always a very valid option. The atmosphere is incredible, and the fans are dedicated (you can tell this because we camp out a week before the game just to get good seats). When you're sitting in Hilton, there's a certain magic that makes you feel lucky to be a cyclone.

8. Options

Iowa State has more than 100 majors and 100 minors, so it's impossible NOT to find something that you love to major in. The options are, quite literally, endless, and I'm confident I'll graduate with a major that I want to do for the rest of my life.

9. Friends

I have met the most incredible people through my time at Iowa State. It is so easy to make friends and form social circles at a school of such enthusiastic and loving people; Iowa State has helped me make friends that will last a lifetime.

10. Culture

Iowa State has an incredible culture that cannot be beat. I can't describe what it is that makes it so special to be a cyclone; just that it certainly is an honor and incredibly extraordinary. Not only am I doing something I love, but I am doing it where I love, and I wouldn't change that for the world.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.
