I've been a part of the Odyssey community since August of 2017. I always saw articles circulating around Facebook and I loved reading them. When I found out that you could apply to be a part of a local community, I jumped at the chance. If you're looking for a platform where you can share your voice, here are five reasons you should think about joining the Odyssey!

You get to write about whatever your heart desires and share it with everyone.

Yes, you read that correctly. If you want to tackle a political issue one week, and the next, you want to write a listicle about cocktails that represent college majors, you can do that! The options are limitless. Plus, you're required to post articles on Facebook and Twitter. That means the world gets to see your masterpieces every week!

It's an outlet for your creativity.

This is kind of delving deeper into the first point, but if you want to write a poem, short story, or anything along those lines, you're free to do that, too! It's a great gateway to unleash your creative side.

It forces you to defeat writer's block.

I know this is one of my biggest weaknesses. I adore writing across the board, but writer's block gets ahold of me far too often. If you have a deadline every week, you're forced to come up with something. It holds you accountable and makes you work hard to overcome that rut.

You get to be a part of an amazing community.

Once you join your local community, you interact with so many other amazing content creators. Our group chats for The Odyssey at West Virginia University range from hyping each other's articles up to debating over food or talking about TV shows. Plus, if you're ever stuck on an article or need help with an idea, there's always somebody there to help you.

Two words: Resume builder.

Unbeknownst to you, you're creating online content that you can put on your resume. Not only does it show your writing capabilities, but if you're posting articles every week, it shows that you can meet deadlines. On top of that, it gives you experience with producing and sharing content online. All of these things are important to put on a resume!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
